Nikhil V. Navkar

I had the opportunity to supervise and work closely with Mohammad during his summer internship at the Qatar Robotic Surgery Center. He was assigned the task of creating intricate and complicated CAD models of robotic tooltips with 4 degrees-of-freedom for minimally invasive surgery and cataloguing them for future use in surgical simulators. Mohammad was able to accurately design all the individual parts and subsequently assemble them into a dynamic assembly model on SolidWorks. He was not only able to meet but exceed the targets set for him at the onset of the internship. He created over a dozen individual models with meticulous attention to the tooltip details. This was more than the initial six models he was required to complete. In addition, Mohammad also developed a novel CAD model of a cannula for an actuated imaging probe to be used in laparoscopic surgery. He was able to appreciate and incorporate the clinical needs into the design. This design was later 3D printed and the prototype was implemented by a separate design team as part of a research project. With his determination and focus, Mohammad was able to overachieve and complete the tasks above expectations. While the internship lasted only two months, Mohammad showed enthusiasm and continued to work with us during his final year of study at Texas A&M University at Qatar. During this period, Mohammad published the work performed during his internship as conference papers at Qatar Foundation’s Annual Research Conference 2014. The papers were titled as ‘Geometric modelling and kinematic analysis of articulated tooltips of a surgical robot’ and ‘Preliminary design of an actuated probe for enhanced visualization in robotic surgery’, and were presented by him during poster presentation session at the conference.
