Mike was an integral part of our cloud journey. He worked side by side with our developers as our first devops goto guy in the early stages. I was thrilled to see him continue to grow in his career to become our director of devops. As director, he built a fantastic process and team as we scaled from those first handful of servers to tens of thousands spread across 7 geographies. He handled himself with grace and courage during the rare downtime and used these opportunities to hone his team to avoid similar issues going forward. Not only did he grow and lead a team of exceptional cloud, build, security and ops center engineers, he understood the alignment of cloud to our business objectives. Because he understood the business need, he diligently helped us optimize our spend via negotiation with vendors, optimized cloud design and constant execution. His experience in AWS has been missed here, but thankfully he left a strong and growing legacy of excellence for our devops teams to follow going forward.

Best manager I've worked for, bar none. I would never have tried a management track had Mike not have created ideal conditions for it. He created our DevOps team from scratch and built into an awesome organization. Management aside, Mike's technical skills were among the best. Even after being director level for while, he was still able to jump into emergency situations and troubleshoot. He created and wrote most of the core puppet code for our config management system. Lastly, he's a master at working with AWS.

After 11 years with Foundstone/McAfee/Intel, I jumped at the opportunity to join Stuart McClure in his next venture. Together with other inaugural members we built Cylance from a static webpage and a DNS server into the disruptive next-gen AV it soon became. Over the next six years, we would develop automation for deployment and management of machine learning farms, sample analysis workflows, and development support. We established an operations team and network operations center, a SecOps team to align corporate and cloud security initiatives and to streamline compliance efforts, a DataOps team to collaborate with development teams on database/cache performance and efficiency, and an automation team focused on supporting all efforts in an idempotent and certifiable fashion. Cylance taught me more lessons both technical and personal than any role I'd held before. Our growth was simply stratospheric, with customer and device counts doubling regularly, often outstripping available resources and requiring rapid innovation. This was not an easy role, but one I am grateful and honored to have had.
