Chromacity is regarded as the Golden Child of Heriot-Watt's spin-out companies. It was interesting to learn about the photonics industry and how ultrafast lasers are used for a wide range of industrial and fundamental research applications. As the only marketing professional in the company, my role was very hands-on. I had complete autonomy over marketing projects, messages, and platforms. Lead generation stemmed from email marketing campaigns using Hubspot and the spin-out company is a good advocate of using LinkedIn and Twitter to create a family culture and reputation as a reliable laser manufacturer. The Edinburgh International Climbing Arena (EICA) is just around the corner from Chromacity and I had spent many a time climbing the walls. I had heard about a company called CyberHawk that deploys drones for visual inspections of critical infrastructure and it was impressive to see their office at the top floor of the climbing centre.Skills include:- Lead Generation- Email Campaigns- Social Media Management- Public Relations / External Comms- Website Management (WordPress)- Managing Google's Suite of Software Solutions- SEO and PPC Campaigns- Google Search Console- Google Analytics

Heriot-Watt University was right on my doorstep. My role involved promotion of the new GRID facility (Global Research Innovation and Discovery centre) which acts as the bridge between business and entrepreneurial activities at Heriot Watt. My role involved managing the internal and external comms associated with launch of the new facility. Brand management was at the core of any comms and ensuring that the new brand continued to feed-off the positive reputation and associations of the prestigious STEM university. Launch of a microsite within the Heriot-Watt website was a key deliverable. Additional projects were event-driven and even included the occasional visit from the Royal Family. There was certainly a lot of variety, but it was a fixed-term contract role, so I was always looking for something more long-term. Heriot-Watt worked with many successful spin-out companies and one, in particular, peaked my interest. Skills included:- Brand Management- Event Management- Internal Comms- External Comms- CSR - Digital Projects (Microsite)

This was a great experience in the world of mobile medical app development and 'at home' self-patient testing (a year before COVID!). My responsibilities involved product marketing management and lead generation for the mobile medical app operated by BBI Solutions. The role involved brand management, lead generation via webinar activities, and developing a suite of brochures that demonstrated the capabilities of using a mobile phone as a lateral flow test reader. Structural changes meant most commercial roles had to gravitate to HQ in Cardiff, so I put the feelers out for something more closer to home. Skills included: - Collateral development- Public Relations- Lead Generation- CRM Updates (Salesforce)- Email Campaigns (Pardot)- Website Management (WordPress)

So, I followed my manager to join SAP gold partner Absoft. We executed email marketing campaigns which were followed up by an external telesales professional and internal commercial teams. Our work took the commercial team all over europe and mainly the Scandic countries as we held our own SAP demos and exhibited at conferences. After several years working for Absoft, my wife was offered a good career opportunity in Edinburgh, so it was a sad farewell to Absoft and Aberdeen, but an exciting opportunity awaited me within the emerging mHealth (Mobile healthcare sector). Skills included:- Email Marketing Campaigns- Lead Generation- Webinar Programmes- Event Management- Social Media Communications- Website Management- CRM Management (Salesforce)

That led me to FPAL, the oil and gas industry procurement platform and my first experience in sales. I managed the supplier sales and marketing team which were involved in the end-to-end buyer decision process. We developed email marketing campaigns and hosted industry events to recruit suppliers followed by regular comms and training to onboard and retain them. Understanding the demands of selling helped me to improve my marketing tactics. It was a privilege to work for a centralised procurement tool developed by the energy industry and used by the energy industry. I enjoyed working with the sales and marketing team, but an opportunity came up when my manager joined an SAP ERP consultancy.Skills included:- Lead Generation- Email Marketing Campaigns- E-newsletters - Website Management- Event Management- Direct Selling- Business Development

So I joined NDT and integrity management contractor CAN Offshore in a marketing generalist role. The company was very strong in developing relationships which I supported by executing corporate hospitality events. There were golf outings, industry quizzes and memorable Burns Night Suppers. Working in a marketing role that was more customer-facing, encouraged me to look into business development opportunities and so I decided to join So I joined NDT and integrity management contractor CAN Offshore in a marketing generalist role.
