Mishika was a Youth Challenge International (YCI) volunteer participant in the Innovate MY Future Program for a period of 8 months in July 2021 - February 2022, completing 131 volunteer hours. YCI is a leading global youth development organization that also works in Canada on intersections of climate change and youth livelihoods. Mishika’s participation on a volunteer project with YCI is a significant accomplishment that shows her dedication, hard work, and commitment to youth development. Partnered with the City of Vaughan, Mishika and a team of youth called Urban Growers, worked on a project to take action on local climate issues to make a real difference in their community. In response to the isolating effects of Covid-19 on the senior population, Urban Growers launched a campaign encouraging community building through gardening food and pollinator-friendly plants, and distributing seeds to Vaughan residents, particularly seniors, in hopes to alleviate isolation and enhance mental and physical health for this population. Throughout the project, Mishika’s team worked in challenging environments with minimal supervision where they took on a high level of responsibility. Mishika’s placement included: 1. An intensive design-thinking and systems-thinking phase to guide her through the process of framing a problem with climate change and developing, testing, and iterating upon a solution 2. Applying for a grant application to fund and enhance their project 3. Ongoing coaching and consultation sessions with YCI 4. Developing and implementing a tangible project with sustainable impact in the city of Vaughan During Mishika’s role as her team’s Consultation Lead, she exhibited strong problem-solving, time management, and communication skills, which were critical for the progress of the project. Mishika’s responsibilities included: • Acting as the key liaison between the team and the public • Coordinating outreach & stakeholder relations on behalf of the Team with project stakeholders, community members and the general public, including coordinating the planning for the Team’s consultation Mishika is a hardworking individual who works efficiently and is able to work well both independently and in a team. Mishika proved to be a great asset as a volunteer with Youth Challenge International and made an important contribution to global youth development.
