During my internship at Fugro I was asked to investigate the possibility of using a FBG inside a GFRP to create a cost efficient and easy to mount accelerometer. The accelerometer that was created had very low sensitivity due to the stiffness of the GFRP. This was the motivation for me to successfully design a 3D printable cost efficient FBG based accelerometer. The internship at TNO was the first experience outside my academic bubble. I was asked to work on a method to detect phosphate in aquatic solutions. This was realized by using the principles of Raman Spectroscopy. Later, to enhance the sensitivity, I tried SERS to enhance the Raman signal.
