When I think about the thousands of volunteers I have had the pleasure of managing and co-ordinating in various roles, Miriam ranks very highly indeed. Her professionalism, commitment, enthusiasm and initiative were always going to ensure that she became one of the National Childbirth Trust''s most senior volunteers. As one of a team of Regional Coordinators, Miriam showed the utmost responsibility in representing the needs of local branches, volunteers, members and parents in her area, which led to her being nominated for several awards. I consider myself lucky to have crossed paths with her.

Miriam tackled her role as a volunteer coordinator as though it was her day job. She supported branches, trained, encouraged and guided many new branch chairs into their role and as she grew in experience helped settle new regional coordinators in too. NCT benefited from stronger branch teams and great feedback tot he staff team and is the better for it.

  • Elizabeth House Day Centre
    • Cookham, Berkshire
    • Day Centre Manager
      • Aug 2015 - Dec 2022

Elizabeth House is a Day Centre in the village of Cookham. It is a registered charity and provides a hot meal to members 5 days a week, plus entertainment, access to a discounted hairdresser and chiropodist, a theatre club for outings and other social events. The centre adapts to the changes in social and mental health of our members, whilst still maintaining a friendly and professional approach as a local charity. We are now back to post-pandemic numbers as a fully opened centre once again with 13-22 members per day. We also have new members who are discovering the day centre for the very first time. We have a wide variety of fundraising events that we run or co-support when other organisations and charities, such as the local Rotary Clubs, offer to raise money on our behalf. Events include stalls at fairs and local Regattas. Next year we will return to our annual quiz and music concerts.

responding to the need for an organised and responsive solution to help isolated and particularly elderly members of the community. Cookham has a higher than UK average number of elderly in its 3000 households and many of them are Elizabeth House members. Alongside a Facebook page with nearly 1000 members, 300 volunteers were recruited, issued with ID passes and instructions, leafleted every household and within a week were shopping, collecting prescriptions, post and dog walking. Elizabeth House became a physical hub with the staff and facilities donated by the Trustees of Elizabeth House and have continued to support the operation now it has moved to being home-based.

I started this company in 1999, originally as a hobby. I sold new, end-of-line or bankrupt stock and nearly new maternity clothes from mums who had already had their babies and wished to resell for a commission or donate their clothes for other mums-to-be at upto 70% discount off the shop pricing. The clothes get a new home, mums get some money back and any clothes not sold or not suitable are recycled to rags so nothing is wasted. I started this company in 1999, originally as a hobby. I was the Training administrator for the sales and systems training courses provided by Newsquest and specifically employed in a new role to run a unique 3 yr Be Inspired Diploma course for sales staff. Originally administering for about 300 London and Essex staff , I added on the rest of the UK staff (approx. 1200) in May 2013 . analysed data trends looking at staff retention rates, trainer ratings, course analysis and feedback . I ensured that records were updated, pre-course work sent in a timely fashion prior to each course and post-course feedback was completed. I worked with 13 trainers and a number of senior advertising managers to develop the courses and ensure that all equipment and manuals were available. I also booked IT training liaising with their trainer and new starters and their managers. I assisted other departments if they were doing a project and was a member of the health and safety committee.

Taken on as a temp and then given a permanent position. Worked in biochemistry department on anti-rejection coatings for medical devices - specifically catheters. The company was funded by investments at the time as it was a start-up but the number of employees had to be reduced after a year to consolidate expenditure. During my year with the company I organised social events as most of the employees were new to the area and for some this was their first post-graduate role. I organised blood samples from patients at various stages of transplant treatment for haematology and serology research - liaising with theatre and nursing staff, the patients and their families and the research departments at Harefield Hospital, the Royal Brompton and other clinics. I was given access to the operating theatre, ITU and post-operative wards as well as outpatients. I kept detailed records and wrote a paper for submission to the BMA with colleagues. I also helped organise my boss's wedding!
