      As an Inpatient Psychiatric Extern, I had the opportunity to work with a team of medical students, resident physicians, attending physicians, resident pharmacists, and pharmacists. Our daily tasks included monitoring patients medication regimens, making medication recommendations, monitoring for adverse events, and performing medication reconciliation and discharge education for individual patients. Weekly, I led a pharmacy patient group session where we did activities to educate patients about their medications as well as answered questions regarding different psychiatric medications. I presented a journal club looking at ketamine in PTSD patients and my final case presentation was over Somatic Symptom Disorder.

      As a member of Dr. Adam Smith's Behavioral and Neuropharmacology lab, I led a pilot experiment looking at the effects of social defeat of prairie voles on odor investigation. This pilot study was part of a larger project investigating the effects of social defeat on the brain of prairie voles. At the 2020 Undergraduate Research Symposium at the University of Kansas, I presented the data generated from this pilot project in a poster to fellow researchers and KU faculty. In addition to this project, I participated in weekly journal clubs with lab members evaluating current literature relevant to our research and assisted in other daily lab functions.

      For my institutional IPPE rotation, I was located at Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital. At this month long rotation, I completed 20+ Medications Reconciliations and Discharge educations along with stroke education, warfarin counseling, and smoking cessation. In addition to patient education, I attended patient team meetings where we collaborated with physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, respiratory therapy, social work, and the overseeing physician. I was also able to help monitor in-patient warfarin therapy, pain medications, and anxiety medications to ensure all were properly prescribed and utilized. Throughout this month, I created two presentations. One discussed the role of pharmacy in dementia and the second was a patient case with an emphasis on immunosuppression and toxoplasmosis.
