As a drug information fellow, I have had the opportunity to co-manage the drug information call center and provide evidence-based recommendations to patients and healthcare providers. Additionally, I have provided numerous drug class analyses to payers to determine differences in drug efficacy across a class. I have also conducted evidence-based analyses and provided formulary recommendations to a local academic hospital. Throughout this fellowship, I have assisted in facilitating an evidence based medicine course for third year pharmacy students and a pharmacology course for dental residents. Additionally I reviewed and fact-checked drug monographs for ASHP’s AHFS Drug Information. This position has allowed me to develop my skills in literature analysis, medical writing, formulary management, content creation, and education.

As an intern at Auburn Pharmacy, my roles include all the functions of a Pharmacy Technician, from inputing and filling prescriptions to customer service. In addition to these roles, I provide Medication Therapy Management services to patients, patient counseling and education on medications, making prescription recommendations to physicians, problem solving and troubleshooting prescription issues, and administering vaccines to patients. At Cingulate Therapeutics, I was able to get inside look at a Pharmaceutical start-up. While on my one-month rotation, I met with many different team members in areas such as Medical Affairs, Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, and Manufacturing. I completed projects that included compiling a list of Key Opinion Leaders for a therapeutic area of interest as well as researching a presenting on a drug candidate for Cingulate’s Precision Time Release platform. At Cingulate Therapeutics, I was able to get inside look at a Pharmaceutical start-up. While on rotation at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Division of Health Care Finance, I was able to gain an in-depth knowledge of the operations of the Kansas Medicaid Pharmacy Program. This experience included revising newsletters sent out by the program to health care providers, utilizing relevant guidelines and medical literature to create prior authorization criteria, and reviewing claims data to look at utilization among Medicaid patients in the state of Kansas. Specialty Pharmacy Extern

While on rotation at Walgreens’ Specialty pharmacy located in Truman Medical Center Behavioral, I completed three projects geared towards mental health as well as running a flu and COVID vaccination clinic. One project I completed was analyzing a patient utilizing the SOAP Note format to identify gaps in the patients treatment regimen and changes I would make. For another project, I led a journal club over a phase three trial for a new drug to treat postpartum depression. My last project was a presentation on Catatonia and current treatment options. For the vaccination clinic portion, I administered first, second, and booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines. I educated patients on vaccinations and recommended vaccines for individual patients.

Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Extern

As an extern at the Wichita VAMC, I managed pharmacologic therapy for veterans in the primary care setting. Each day, I met (both in-person and virtually) with patients to evaluate efficacy and safety of current pharmacologic therapy as well as made changes to treatment by initiating, discontinuing, or adjusting medications to optimize patient care utilizing nationally recognized guidelines. Disease states managed include diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and smoking cessation. As an extern at the Wichita VAMC, I managed pharmacologic therapy for veterans in the primary care setting. On my portion with ProPharma Group, I answered unsolicited Medical Information requests with the supervision of my preceptor, created and updated process sheets for multiple teams, and gave a presentation over a competitor drug to the team of Medical Information Specialists. While at the University of Kansas Drug Information Center, I gained experience in responding to drug information questions, updating drug monographs, and creating graphics from data for presentation. Inpatient Psychiatric Pharmacy Extern

As an Inpatient Psychiatric Extern, I had the opportunity to work with a team of medical students, resident physicians, attending physicians, resident pharmacists, and pharmacists. Our daily tasks included monitoring patients medication regimens, making medication recommendations, monitoring for adverse events, and performing medication reconciliation and discharge education for individual patients. Weekly, I led a pharmacy patient group session where we did activities to educate patients about their medications as well as answered questions regarding different psychiatric medications. I presented a journal club looking at ketamine in PTSD patients and my final case presentation was over Somatic Symptom Disorder.

Undergraduate Researcher

As a member of Dr. Adam Smith's Behavioral and Neuropharmacology lab, I led a pilot experiment looking at the effects of social defeat of prairie voles on odor investigation. This pilot study was part of a larger project investigating the effects of social defeat on the brain of prairie voles. At the 2020 Undergraduate Research Symposium at the University of Kansas, I presented the data generated from this pilot project in a poster to fellow researchers and KU faculty. In addition to this project, I participated in weekly journal clubs with lab members evaluating current literature relevant to our research and assisted in other daily lab functions.

For my institutional IPPE rotation, I was located at Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital. At this month long rotation, I completed 20+ Medications Reconciliations and Discharge educations along with stroke education, warfarin counseling, and smoking cessation. In addition to patient education, I attended patient team meetings where we collaborated with physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, respiratory therapy, social work, and the overseeing physician. I was also able to help monitor in-patient warfarin therapy, pain medications, and anxiety medications to ensure all were properly prescribed and utilized. Throughout this month, I created two presentations. One discussed the role of pharmacy in dementia and the second was a patient case with an emphasis on immunosuppression and toxoplasmosis.
