Selected through the Bank of America Student Leaders program, I was paired with a non-profit to study business skills and how to make an impact in the community. Working with the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, I served as an intern in program development, communications, and digital marketing. I designed healthy eating recipe cards and a cookbook, developed informational advertisement flyers, and aided in the implementation of the 25th annual Thingamajig youth science convention. At a national leadership conference, I promoted political advocacy with business leaders and congressmen and was selected as one of three interns to be featured nationally. Show less

I worked independently on a project to investigate the length, location, and behavior patterns of processed pseudogene mutations in a large-scale clinical data set. I collaborated to identify 671 novel pseudogenes that increase confidence in future exome sequencing. Processed pseudogenes are non-functional DNA mutations that are created when transcribed RNA is reinserted into the genome instead of being translated. The success of exome sequencing, which is used to identify genetic mutations that could signify diseases, can be affected by the presence of pseudogenes that impact the understanding of any potential abnormalities. In the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences, I helped design, plan, and perform an experiment to evaluate the bovine neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) response to stimulation with a soil parasite Ostertagia ostertagi. NETs are fibrous structures created from the DNA of the neutrophil immune system cell that trap and demobilize pathogens in the body. This work has applications to increasing the understanding of the cattle immune system to better aid in their development and growth. At the ScienceMontgomery Fair, I received the MRIGlobal Biology Impact award and Society for In Vitro Biology award. Show less
