During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was faced with the ultimatum of deferring my studies for a year or continuing on as normal. I decided on the former and during this year away from my studies, I dedicated my time to finding a full-time job where I could gain more work experience and save up some money. I was hired by M&S temporarily at first however, after my probationary period ended I was kept on full-time, often working between 25 - 38 hours per week (depending on the shifts available). Working here allowed me to further my customer service skills and many others such as time management but importantly, it has given me the experience and training of being a key worker throughout the pandemic. My role consisted of numerous jobs such as; restocking shelves/stock inquiries, working on the tills and handling money, managing waste, and working on the door checking customers in and out of the store whilst maintaining COVID rules. These included cleaning trolleys and baskets and ensuring social distancing and masks were worn amongst customers and colleagues. After the branch I was working in closed down, I was transferred to another branch not too far away where they switched my duties from a food sales associate to a clothing associate instead. I was unphased by the change, despite never working within the clothing and home department before, and I quickly and efficiently learned the new skill set I needed in order to thrive in this department. My new duties included helping to rearrange the shop floors based on what was currently new or when required for seasonal changes. I worked in the fitting rooms, helping customers with their clothing and offering help when needed. I was trained on bra-fitting. Putting away stock and keeping the shop floor to a tidy and high standard. During sales, I would price up the clothing required. I left this role to return to my studies in September 2021 but returned over the Christmas months to help out. Show less

I worked part-time as a Telemarketer for Blueberry alongside my second year studies. I thoroughly enjoyed working here as it gave me a new insight into administrative and office-style roles which I hadn’t previously obtained through my years of retail experience. My responsibilities included working on a variety of marketing campaigns such as Harper Collins and Brexit surveys and talking over the phone with clients and business directors. When working on the Harper Collins campaign, I would talk with both current and potential clients, and arrange meetings between themselves and Harper Collins consultants. Not only would I be arranging these via telephone but also via email and so I have gained confidence in both of these aspects of professional communication. In addition, I had to have impeccable skills of Excel documents. I left this role due to COVID-19 as I had to move back home. Show less
