Jun 2020 - Jul 2020
Carried out an independent project based on previous research done by Prickly Thistle and University of Edinburgh academics, looking at local (Scottish Highlands) dye and textile fibre innovation within the tartan industry. This project explored the use of native plant material for fibre making and dye extraction with a circular and local economy in mind. Due to the Covid pandemic, I was unable to go to the Prickly Tartan weaving mill and instead carried out experiments at home using hand-collected thistles and accessible chemicals; the work was very successful and over 80 samples of wool were dyed with thistle and other vegetable materials using varied conditions.
