It is my pleasure to recommend Miki Tanaka for employment as an ESL instructor. Miki began working as an ESL intern at English Language Programs at the beginning of the 2019 academic year. During the fall semester she has been assigned to co-teach academic writing in a multi-level classroom, including intermediate and advanced ESL students who are preparing for higher education in the U.S. I had the opportunity to observe Miki teach in November 2018 and I witnessed a very engaging lesson plan. Miki planned her lesson to include authentic tasks for her students and she delivered her lesson efficiently and with motivational scaffolding for her multi-level and multi-background students. When Miki is not teaching at ELP, she is also a Japanese teacher and a TESOL graduate student. I have heard praise for her teaching and student work from other professors on campus. I have also reviewed some of her teaching and learning portfolio items. It is clear that her teaching philosophy and her practice are aligned and both reflect modern second language acquisition best practices. Miki is a great team worker and is very inspiring to students and teachers alike. She has the personal experience of excelling in her second language acquisition and she knows what it takes to help others achieve this goal. She would be a great addition to any teaching team.

I first had the opportunity to get to know Miki on the personal level during my exchange program at Aoyama Gakuin University. A couple of years later, I had the opportunity to work with her in a startup project that, due to her departure to the US, had to be put on hold indefinitely. During our project, I worked closely with her creating content for Japanese audiences looking to improve their English skills. Miki always showed remarkable work ethic, passion and creativity. Miki also has a very solid cultural awareness due to her overseas experience, circle of friends and interests. Her go-getter personality combined with her kind personality make her a great colleague always ready to lend a helping hand to her teammates and contributing during brainstorming sessions and meetings. I’m confident that Miki will surpass any expectations in the opportunities that she earns ahead. Miki is driven, self-confident, proactively helpful, always with a beautiful smile in her face and I know she will achieve success in her career.
