I was fortunate enough to work with Mike on the Signup & Rental List projects at LOVEFiLM/Amazon. I found Mike to be very easy to work with as a collaborative design partner. I could trust Mike to do an excellent technical job of the front-end design, communicate clearly about any areas of interaction between the front and back ends, and guide the back-end development towards a coherent user experience. Mike would be a blessing to any front-end or full stack development team.

Very glad I had the pleasure of working with Mike, he is a fastidious, brilliant web developer with great passion for what he does. He is deeply knowledgable about web development and willing and able to share and his wisdom and experience with others and I have benefitted greatly form this. Mike has the ability to communicate complex ideas with clarity. I worked with him on a number of projects including Sign up funnels and Rental List. He can design and build innovative, wonderful technical solutions for very complex requirements.

I co-built and released the Covid Symptom Study App on iOS and Android using React Native in 4 days. 4 million people downloaded the app, including 1 million installs on the second day of launch (number 1 Healthcare app on the UK App Store at launch, ahead of the NHS app, and was listed in the top 10 apps in all categories, just behind TikTok). The data collected by the app proved instrumental in informing the UK government and the NHS on potential hospitalisation hotspots, and helped reassure people through timely and useful information about Covid and its impact. I built and delivered the medical study consent post-purchase flow for selling the ZOE nutrition app in the US, and services to automatically generate pre-filled blood test cards and blood test requisition forms for the operations/fulfilment team. This enabled the fulfilment team to scale from 25 orders a week to 1,000. I delivered a working checkout that supported both the US and the UK using Stripe as a backend (supporting individual country-specific Stripe accounts for correct financial reporting). This allowed the company to soft-launch the ZOE nutrition product in the UK. I've also been involved, and at points leading the development of various pricing tests and strategies, including running A/B tests, to optimise the product's positioning in the UK market. I've also done over 100 interviews of candidates, backend and frontend, at all levels of engineering, and various types of interviews: collaborative code reviews, async assignment discussions, code exercise submissions, systems design interviews, and a handful of initial phone screen interviews. I delivered an award-winning news app for iOS and Android using React Native, which talks to microservice-oriented backend services for delivering the content. I also built an end-to-end publishing system to support in-house written content and ingesting articles from third-party news publishers, integrating into a custom structural content editor. The backend servers used Node.js, MongoDb, and Redis RQ for worker tasks. I also designed and delivered a multi-funnel signup framework, with integrations to third party systems. Show less

The Instasupply platform is Python, Flask and Elasticsearch, and worker queues using Redis' RQ. I designed and built Chart of Accounts, that allows customers to allocate their invoice spend to Nominals, Departments and Cost Centres. This allows customers to export their invoice data into their existing accounting systems, whether that be by pushing to a cloud-based accounting system, CSV download to import into their offline accounting system, or connecting their accounting system to our API. Designed and built a generic revision tracking system that tracks changes to specific attributes in data-objects. Currently used to track supplier price changes in the Product catalogue, and allowing buyers to approve these price changes. Designed and built a database independent query interface to help encapsulate ElasticSearch bespoke behaviour and logic, and to abstract away dependencies on ElasticSearch (and features deprecated/removed in later ElasticSearch releases). This query interface also encapsulates representations of simple aggregations (totals, counts, averages, etc.) Designed and built a Payment Run system to help customers pay their outstanding invoices, consolidating multiple payments where applicable. The output is a CSV format that can be uploaded to their online bank, and tracks the progress of payments, along with remittance advice. This was used as a proof-of-concept of supporting a third-party payment system alongside customers self-managing payments of invoices. Show less
