I was appointed into this role despite facing strong competition. I report directly to the Chief Technical Officer (CTO). In the first instance, I became responsible for creating the Engineering Department for renewable house demonstration installations. I loved the fact that I was able to play a pivotal role in identifying the site for the first renewable installations in Berkeley, Gloucestershire. This is a national centre of excellence, designed to accelerate the UK’s drive towards net-zero. I've been responsible from day one for effectively creating the whole project which is a series of buildings, installed with state of the art renewable technologies that turn buildings from passive into active buildings contributing energy to fuel themselves and also to pass into the grid. I was instrumental in setting up from scratch the workshop for heat pump test rig demonstrators, heat pump testing and running of 400Kw multiple technology heat network projects on the Gloucester site. I created all Health and Safety systems and processes from scratch utilising Bright Safe as a base and then expanded and tailored the base system for site specific needs. One thing I am particularly proud of is that I worked closely with the CTO, Project Managing a 3.6 Million heat network installation utilising multiple technologies including a 250 KW Biomass boiler, high temp heat pump, low temp heat pump, three Gas boilers, two Electric boilers, combined heat and power unit and s 1 mega watt thermal battery. Some further project management involvement has included design stage negotiations, construction and building fabric design, civil engineering, contractor management, budget control, etc. I was also able to commission and install cutting edge renewable technologies including Sunamp batteries (phase change material) Thermal Storage, Photo Voltaic Thermal, combined heat and power unit, thermal dynamic heat pumps and multiple other technologies.

Maintenance Manager

May 2012 - Jan 2020
I was initially engaged in a Maintenance Management role, progressing quickly to Senior Management. I'm particularly proud of the fact that I was to my knowledge, the only Maintenance Manager to have been promoted to senior management level in this organisation while holding this position. This is a complex business being a combination of maintenance management, cost and budget control coupled with the demands of leading a high performing team that work in demanding conditions. A key element of the role was managing the annual as well as mini or planned shutdowns. During factory shutdowns, we worked 24/7 whilst the plant was not producing, stripping Down, cleaning and refurbishing the plant equipment. This necessitated the presence of up to around 40 contractors on site at any time where I was accountable for planning, scheduling, safety, contractors as well as daily problem solving.I am particularly proud of the fact that we had zero acccidents during this time which is something that had not been achieved at this site before. We were actually awarded the "5 year" award in recogntion of the exemplary safety record. As a key member of the senior management team, I was responsible for all plant/site maintenance, support, stores and also maintenance purchasing. I led a team comprising four mechanical technicians, five Instrument and Electrical technicians, a Stores Manager and a Stores Person. In addition, I also led a planner supervisor as well as shutdown planner/maintenance administrator. I was responsible for departmental budgets up to 1.5 million, cost reduction projects, maintenance purchasing and stores valued at over £3 million.

Jun 2003 - May 2012
I loved working in this highly demanding yet rewarding role being totally responsible for all plant as well on site maintenance and support requirements for the business and being part of the senior management team. I am proud to have been able to lead a team of equipment, facilities and project engineers that were essential to supporting all production and site equipment as well as facilities. A key element of the role was being responsible for departmental budgets, cost reduction projects, maintenance purchasing and stores. Key stakeholder engagements included working closely with the process and production teams which proved highly rewarding. Among many responsibilities, I particularly enjoyed carrying out effective risk assessments, dealing proactively with Health and Safety as well as Environmental issuesI played a vital part in contributing to effective cost control, out of control action plans, maintenance planning, Contractor supervision, procurement and supply chain management, recruitment and more. The team comprised of nine engineers made up of two day engineers and seven shift engineers, having commenced with a team of only 3 engineers and an engineering co-ordinator. As the company grew, I recruited another 6 engineers and took on the purchasing function for all maintenance stock and contracts.

This was an incredibly rewarding role, working hard to install new equipment and also to set up from scratch new planned preventative maintenance schedules to meet up-time targets for the new Toyota line. In addition, I was also responsible for fault diagnosis and repair of numerous extrusion moulding and interior laminating equipment, design and installation of machine and supply alarm systems and ordering of machine spares and upgrades. I loved supervising and co-ordinating a team of engineers that worked around the factory. It goes without saying that all work needed to be carried out effectively to industry standards and in a heavily unionised, health and safety conscious environment.
