    • Senior Network Engineer (Contract)
      • Nov 2007 - Feb 2008

Responsible for managing the migration of server and network equipment from two existing data centres to two new data centres on the Longbridge site. This role involved many aspects of the extensive Windows and UNIX server infrastructure and also a large installed base of Cisco, Checkpoint and Juniper network equipment. I was responsible for consolidating and simplifying the existing server and network equipment to better suit the requirements of Nanjing Automobile Corporation who had inherited the IT infrastructure from the former MG Rover Group. This was a fixed term contract and I was able to deliver my objectives within the timeframe required, and also to provide knowledge transfer to other staff at NAC. Show less

Design and implementation for various clients, including Nanjing Automobile Corporation, MG Rover, Land Rover, Department of Health, BAE Systems, CSC and Barclays. I have been able to use skills covering many different technology areas including virtualisation (VMware), networking, Windows and UNIX / Linux, Exchange, and I covered all of these technologies on 24-hour on-call rotas for the above clients. This knowledge has enabled me to resolve problems where a single discipline would be too restrictive to see the larger picture. Skills used – VMware VI3 / ESX; Cisco ASA/PIX firewalls, routers, LAN switches, VPN concentrators; Nokia / Checkpoint Firewall/1 NG; SonicWall; site-to-site VPNs; Zeus ZXTM traffic management and load balancing; HP-UX, Solaris, OpenBSD and Linux OS installation and configuration, DNS (QIP, Bind and Microsoft), Postfix, SSH / SFTP, RADIUS; installation and configuration of Windows server products, Microsoft Clustering, Exchange, ISA proxy server, Active Directory. • Jun 2000 - Dec 2001

High-level and detailed design of very high security and very high availability network infrastructure for an Application Service Provider / Cloud Services platform for a Nortel customer. This role enabled me to use my skills in designing highly robust and secure network infrastructures based around Bay / Nortel Networks Passport routers and switches and Nokia / Checkpoint firewalls. Due to the very high security and availability requirements of an ASP platform, this role was especially demanding and enjoyable. I was responsible for designing and implementing routers, switches, firewalls and VPN devices in all areas of the network - including customer access points (leased-line, Internet VPN and dial-up), the network core, and in the server tiers and management networks. I was also responsible for all aspects of the Nortel Networks Shasta devices used in the network, including security policies, traffic shaping and rate limiting, DiffServ marking, Network Address Translation policies and inter-device VPNs. My team was responsible for the design and initial installation of the equipment before delegating the day-to-day administration to the NOC (Network Operations Centre) and we led a team of around 20 NOC staff. Full systems design and implementation of a new service infrastructure for Softlab involving the migration from a previously outsourced service. As a key member of a small team comprising 6 staff I was responsible for many technical design decisions. My main responsibilities were to design and implement a new remote access system for global access to the network; the DNS infrastructure; Internet connectivity using multiple proxy servers and Cisco PIX firewalls; and a company-wide backup solution. I was appointed as the Technical Team Leader for a project to integrate the Softlab network in the UK with the German Softlab network. I was responsible for all of the changes within the UK, including DNS and WINS integration, NT trust relationships, and the configuration of Cisco routers. I managed UK and German colleagues to ensure that the network integration was completed within budget and on time. Show less
