The course provides students with an introduction to social entrepreneurship. Through individual assignments, group exercises, guest speakers, discussions, and experiential learning activities, students develop the skills to create businesses that achieve the double bottom line of both profitability and social benefit. Topics covered include the lean startup methodology, business model canvas, customer discovery, sales, marketing, and how to pitch. Experts in the field and successful social entrepreneurs share successes and lessons learned from failures in panel discussions. The course focuses on developing an entrepreneurial mindset as students think through the various stages of building a business from ideation to experimentation to optimization. Students form teams to create new business ideas that incorporate a social impact model supporting underserved or underrepresented communities locally or globally. Students are encouraged to incorporate the Jesuit values into the DNA of their new business ideas. Students learn the importance of “no margin, no mission,” because social enterprises require sustainable business models to generate enough revenue to increase their positive social impact.
