I met Mike Clayton when my father was working in the Army at West Point, NY. Mike was the head assistant wrestling coach at West Point and helped lead their team to a top 25 team finish while he was there. He also helped coach the youth wrestling team I wrestled on. Mike kept up with and my family even after we both left West Point for future endeavors. Mike coached, mentored, and helped me for years following. I would recommend Mike for any coaching or mentorship role that might come his way. His passion and full dedication to his athletes and those around him is something rare. You cannot teach most of the of the characteristics that Mike displays on a day in and day out basis.

Planned and successfully executed the growth and development of a college wrestling team into a perennial nationally ranked program - both academically and athletically. In 7 years with the Ducks, Coach Clayton coached 5 All-Americans, 8 Academic All-Americans, top 20 team academic rankings 6 of 7 years (highest finish of 3rd with a 3.551 gpa including 9 wrestlers on the President's List with over a 3.75 gpa), top 30 team rankings in each of 6 years (highest of 16th).Clayton quickly built the program into a national power just nine years after its revival, with the Ducks earning their highest-ever team ranking of No. 16 in 2010-11 while posting the third-best grade-point average (3.551) in the country. Clayton saw three of his wrestlers earn a total of five All-America honors, including the program’s top two all-time wins leaders in Brandon MacWhinnie and Joey Favia, as well as multiple Centennial Conference Wrestler of the Year awards. His teams also became mainstays in the NWCA Scholar All-America awards, ranking as high as third in the nation.Several moments in his tenure have been particularly memorable, including the Ducks’ first-ever victory over in-state rival No. 12 The College of New Jersey in 2011-12, another win over #6 TCNJ in 2013, a 25-7 win over NYU at Madison Square Garden and a near-upset of Division I Duke University in 2012-13. The 2008-09 team also broke a long-standing record for season wins with 12, topping the mark set by the 1979-80 squad during the program’s second revival.Clayton accumulated a career record of 97-67-1 (38-13 in the Centennial Conference) record, earning the 2008 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Rookie Coach of the Year award and 2009 Centennial Conference Coach of the Year recognition along the way. He served as the 2011 U.S. FILA Cadet Team Pan-Am co-Head Coach and trained the U.S. Team to a pair of gold medals in greco and freestyle wrestling in Campeche, Mexico in August of 2011.
