  I joined OFIS in order to expand the paths I could use to find the intersection between social justice and science. As a mentor, I was able to facilitate two high school students through the scientific process while they worked on a capstone project addressing an issue in their community that could be solved by science and social justice. I was inspired by mentors and mentees around the US through weekly and monthly meetings. This inspiration allowed me to use my new leadership skills to facilitate JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) discussions in my other scientific graduate student and instructor positions.
