Research on HIV and Hepatitis C using a co-infection model. We use the novel AFC8-hu mouse, which has a chimeric human liver and engrafted human immune system and is permissive for HCV replication and human liver fibrosis induction, to study the effect of HIV co-infection on HCV-induced liver fibrosis in vivo. No other animal model supports HIV/HCV co-infection and allows these interactions to be studied in vivo under controlled conditions (1-3). 1. E. Dolgin, Nature 474, S14 (Jun 9, 2011). 2. E.
