Under the guidance of Dr. Warram, conducted experiments to map the interactions between Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and the blood-brain barrier to justify that GBM-targeted antibody therapy is feasible. Additionally, understanding the interactions that take place between the brain and the cancer will help oncologist tailor GBM treatments. Furthermore, this study will also justify the feasibility of the new antibody-based imaging techniques in the field of tumor resection. Skills learned: immunohistochemistry, multiple modalities for bioluminescent imaging, confocal microscopy, animal modeling and analysis of fluorescent intensity. Show less

Under the guidance of Dr. Victor Darley-Usmar, I conducted experiments into test the hypothesis that mitochondrial dysfunction is the basis of NSAID related bleeding. As platelets are essential components of clot formation, my experiments centered on assessment of mitochondrial function in platelets. I tested whether NSAIDs influence mitochondrial energy production under conditions that simulate bleeding. Skills learned include tissue culture, platelet aggregometry, platelets bioenergetics using the Seahorse XF96 analyzer. Show less

Under the guidance of Dr. Amit Gaggar, I conducted experiments to test whether cigarette smoke extract (CSE) would cause macrophages to exhibit a pro-inflammatory phenotype and would increase in Prolyl endopeptidase (PE) activity in THP-1 cells . Skills learned include tissue culture, cell culture, protein assay, flurometry, western blotting and Animal models. Under the guidance of Dr. Amit Gaggar, I conducted experiments to study the role of pro-inflammatory macrophage phenotype plays in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. I tested the hypothesis that Interleukin-8 (IL-8) and acetyl Proline-Glycine-Proline (acPGP) trigger monocytes to differentiate into pro-inflammatory macrophages (M1 phenotype) by measuring changes in the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Skills learned include tissue culture, cell culture, protein assay, flurometry, western blotting and Animal models. Show less
