"Using pheromones to increase bumblebee hive productivity and foraging activity". We tested the effects of three particular pheromones by carrying out bioassays in which synthetic pheromones were applied. We could demonstrate and increase in queen production, delay in worker egglaying and an increase in the workers flight activity. • Jan 2016 - Mar 2016

The project is part of an Academic Consultancy Training (ACT) and it has been commissioned by Wouter Verkerke (Wageningen UR: Greenhouse Horticulture PPO/PRI). The team is composed by 6 different students of Plant Sciences and Organic Agriculture. The aim of the project is to redesign a sustainable cultivation system for strawberries. Since the greenhouse cultivation is relatively new for strawberries, there is a knowledge-gap compared to well-stablished greenhouse crps like tomato. Because sustainability in modern greenhouse cultivation systems entails many aspects, the scope of this project is to find more sustainable alternatives to the use of substrate, water, nutrients and support systems.
