Mick is an excellent communicator and has a comprehensive understanding of the higher education residential space. Having worked as a colleague alongside Mick, and now as his indirect supervisor, I have observed Mick in a variety of situations and have always been impressed, in particular, by his calm and diligent management of difficult situations or critical incidents and emergencies. Mick relates extremely well to the student body, but equally to his colleagues, and staff within the wider university and housing sector. In my opinion he has been a fantastic addition to the team at La Trobe.

I am employed as the Head/ Principal of Mary White College located on campus at UNE Armidale, NSW (approx a 3 hr drive inland from Coffs Harbour; and a 6 hr drive from Sydney). The Head of College is responsible for the provision of services to students to support their academic and pastoral care needs, personal development, leadership, community involvement, welfare, safety & security. The College caters for approx 210 residents and is one of nine established Colleges within the UNE Residential System. The role involves the management & coordination of many working groups within the College including a Senior Common Room; Junior Common Room (social club); Academic Mentors; and Resident Fellows. In my first year as Head of College, I managed to gain approval for funding of a $65K renovation to enable residents to cook in a Communal Kitchen and also obtained SAF funding of $20K to update our data projector & electronic screen; upgrade our lighting in the Dining Hall as well as purchase new furniture for common spaces.

STEMS or 'Student Transition Experience Management & Support' is used to manage the transition experience for students. STEMS is a web based pre-arrival induction package that reduces student anxiety; increases retention rates and improves your operational efficiency. It is a tailored, individual package for each University because we know you are different. The pre-induction covers topics as far ranging as: arrival times and bookings; personal safety; academic assistance; international students; health & safety; rules & regulations & student support services, A great feature is the knowledge tests and survey tools along the way - so you'll know who's taking in the information. Another key aspect is the ability to 'multi tag' the responses to questions and have the ability to drill down further to gain further insights into your new community members or to flag potential issues with other staff that can be dealt with in a timely and efficient manner. STEMS is much more than a pre-arrival induction. Modules include Library inductions; Room Inspection & Inventory; Academic Assistance; International Student Induction and new in 2013 the Events Management module that will take the hassle and guess work out of planning everything from your next Faculty gathering to the Annual Ball. We have a proven track record of improving the student experience in many UK university settings. We'd love the opportunity to work alongside you to make your student transition experience easier to manage and for you to be able to focus on the things you do best.
