My birth journey started almost 20 years ago, with the birth of my own amazing child, whose unexpected breech presentation caused me to shift my birth plans significantly. Over time I have been called to support different parents as they navigate their own journeys’ into parenthood. My experience has encouraged me to be especially empathetic and supportive of parents who have had births outside of their expectations. Experience has taught me, this is almost all parents. More than a decade ago, I became reacquainted with Birthing from Within, a book by Pam England. Pam has developed BFW into a program for prenatal preparation and mentorship. The BFW approach matches my own philosophy that birth is not only a physiological process but one with psychological implications. In essence, birth can be, and perhaps should be, a rite of passage. My first birth allowed me the opportunity to learn about breech positioning. Due to that experience and following birth, which was a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) I have become an advocate for increased education and choice during and leading up to birth. I have participated in the planning of two international conferences bringing together experts from multiple fields. This encourages me to continue to research pertinent information from multiple fields of inquiry in the interest of supporting birthing families. I am always working to expand my knowledge of the physical, emotional and psychological aspects of birth to better support, my clients, as they traverse this path. Doing so has led me to courses from Spinning Babies, Penny Simkin, and Robin Lim. I look forward to continuing my journey, humbly supporting new and growing families through the birth process.
