I had the pleasure of meeting Michelle during admissions week at Medgar Evers College in the fall of 2012 and have been associated with her to present. In my role as Programs Coordinator MEC WFD-ACE, seldom do I have the opportunity of getting to know a student who is as industrious and committed to lifelong learning as Michelle. Over the years she has stayed true to her love of learning by returning to MEC for industry specialized trainings offered in the School of Workforce Development Adult and Continuing Education. She has earned several certifications in the Allied Healthcare field including CASAC, Phlebotomy and MCCA, which supports her current career. Her friendly demeanor coupled with her academic performances each time leaves a lasting impression on her peers and professors alike. Michelle’s compassionate and pleasant personality complements her excellent caregiving abilities. She’s a keen listener with a heart for counseling, (her ultimate long term goal) In her current role as a Certified Phlebotomist, she is gentle with the needle but quick on the draw, as demonstrated during her training. I’m sure her patients appreciate that skill. I am pleased to be an associate of Michelle Selman-Fischer and wish her well in all her strides towards upward mobility.

I met Michelle in connection with an initiative to improve the literacy and numeracy of a cohort of adolescent students in Trinidad and Tobago who had not previously met academic benchmarks. Michelle approached the challenge with unparalleled passion and commitment, actively cultivating a broader vision for what was possible for these teens. She pushed beyond the parameters of the project to curate experiences geared toward self-knowledge and empowerment. This included exposure to the arts, a student-centric approach to reading and creative writing and a timely introduction to sexual and reproductive health and rights. She also went the extra mile to establish mentorship relationships that continued to offer academic guidance and encouragement to students beyond the life of the project. Michelle imbues her work with a sense of positivity and possibility. Beyond her technical skills, she's masterful at cultivating relationships and leveraging them in service of young people. I look forward to future collaborations.
