Michelle is passionate and genuine about helping students discover their career paths. She created numerous after-school skills building groups to guide younger students gain casual employment. She also makes herself available for individual higher education selection for all year 12 students. As my manager, I felt well supported. Michelle always made herself available for when I needed clarification and was faced with doubt. She is compassionate and patient towards others and I really enjoyed working with Michelle.

My responsibilities are many and varied to ensure the effective management of the Careers Centre. I am careers counsellor, information gatherer and deliverer and marketer and promoter of the work of the office to the community. The role is student focused with special attention given to the career development needs of students in Years 10-12. What does my role involve? These are just some of the great things that I get to do... - individual career counselling - one on one sessions which seek to identify the areas of interest followed by a discussion of academic performance, the identification of personal strengths and areas that require further development. In this consultation process, a student is encouraged to create a action plan to assist them to reach their academic goals. - Preparing and presenting the Year 10 career assessment program. This involves supporting students through a career profiling system which is followed up with in depth interviews. Profiling helps students to continue to develop greater self awareness which is a main aim of career counselling in the middle years of school. Students are also assisted in the important decision making process for subject selection in Year 11. - Supporting Work Experience - Coordinating vocational (TVET) education for senior students - Event planning related to careers - careers expos, guest speakers, excursions, workshops, etc - Continued professional development to ensure that I have the knowledge and skills to deliver a high quality of service to the school community - Advising Year 11 & 12 students regarding tertiary education opportunities - overseas, interstate, regional and local - Most importantly, supporting our wonderful students. It is exciting to be in a role where I have the privilege of supporting and encouraging each girl as she begins her journey from Brigidine College to an exciting and fulfilling future career. For an ENFJ, as I am, it doesn't get much better.

Positive Psychology is the scientific and applied study of the strengths that allow people to thrive. The field is founded on the belief that we all want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate our “best selves”, and to enhance our experiences in life, including our work. It is about embracing what is good in our lives and doing more of it. My work at Career Avenues is based on the principles of Positive Psychology. We know that successful career planning develops out of a positive outlook on life and events - where the focus is on our strengths rather than our deficits. When we work to the strengths that we naturally have, we feel a deep sense of engagement and energy, are better able to achieve things, feel good about ourselves and fulfill our potential. My role involves meeting with individual students to provide constructive feedback about the student’s personal style (Majors Personality Type Inventory), aptitudes, and career interests. All of which are identified during the Career Avenue profiling process. This is followed by an interview with the young person to discuss ideas for subject selection and possible future career directions. I am fortunate to work with a dedicated and skilled team of psychologists and counsellors with Career Avenues. The joy of the work is that I meet the most wonderful young people who are keen to learn more about themselves and possible future career paths.
