During my MSc, I assisted in coordinating and organizing for the National Science Foundation funded Undergraduate Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): Before and After a Supervolcano which is a joint project between Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN) and Mercyhurst University (Erie, PA). The project is half field based, where over the course of two weeks the students learn introductory field method skills including field mapping, taking structural measurements, sample collection, etc. The other half is split between the two universities, where those that choose a igneous petrology path spend the next five weeks at Vanderbilt learning sample preparation and processing skills including cutting for thin sections, crushing, powdering and fusing disks for X-ray Fluorescence, and epoxy rock chip mounts for gathering EDS-SEM analyses. The other students spend their five weeks at Mercyhurst learning remote sensing methods where they use spectral data together with their field based observations to map volcanic terrains and differentiate between lava flows. The students presented their results at the National Geological Society of America conference in the fall of 2016.
