Canine Rehabilitation is a growing field, especially over the last decade. There has been a shift from the backyard dog to family pet, and now a member of the family. More specialized services are now available to canines, such as cardiology, opthamology, internal medicine, and rehabilitation. A good number of pet insurance companies also now cover rehab treatment costs in the insurance plan. Many common ailments that affect humans also affect canines, such as ACL tears, discogenic pain, arthritis, tendonitis, etc. As both a physiotherapist and a canine rehab provider, I have noted a lot of commonalities in the treatment of both types of patients (human and canine): stretching, strengthening (including a home exercise program), range of motion, modality usage (ultrasound, laser, shockwave, muscle stim), gait analysis, etc. From traumatic incidents to general over work or wear and tear with time, canine rehabilitation can help.
