The project scored 15/15 at evaluation and reads as who's who in materials research and industrial ontologies. It has gathered great momentum with 19 international partners (several of which are actually clusters of prestigious partner organisations), in addition to 11 industrial demonstrators from the likes of Siemens, Airbus and Bosch, in-kind demonstrators from Japan, Korea, China, and Brazil, and high level US advisors. The Industry Commons Foundation is in charge of ensuring long-term legacy of the innovation breakthroughs and of galvanising further industrial domains. Watch out for upcoming Industry Commons initiatives. Show less

In 2020 we derived best practice for running innovation labs during the pandemic. 50 experts from 22 countries joined in person to imagine "Another Green World" at MTF Labs Aveiro with global satellites in Mexico, Norway, and as part of university curricula at the University of Porto, with inspirational speakers from all over the world joining online and global collaborations. In 2019 we ran 3 residences: at the department of AI and Robotics at Örebro University; at Infobip - one of the biggest global tech unicorns; and at the Frankfurt Fair. In 2018 we ran MTF Stockholm in partnership with KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the biggest AI project in Swedish history with over 800 hands-on participants. Later we were in residence at ZKM - Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. In 2017 we rolled out the first of a series of #MTFLabs with a residence at the European Commission in Brussels and a lab at Slush in Helsinki. In 2016 we took over the legendary Funkhaus in Berlin with over 500 contributors, partners such as the MIT Media Lab and Ars Electronica Futurelab, and IP from a variety of industry sectors. In 2015 MTF expanded to include the #MusicBricks toolkit with incubators and accelerators for the best creative ideas, with MTF Scandinavia in Umeå and MTF Central in Ljubljana. In 2014 MTF ran 5 events: Wellington NZ at Mac's, Boston at Microsoft Research NERD Labs, London in partnership with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican, Berlin at Factory, and Paris at the Centre Pompidou. https://mtflabs.net was launched in London in 2012, by pulling the entire music technology ecosystem under one roof, with more tech companies joining in 2013. It meaningfully extends content for playlists which have the most creative and abstract titles and personal themes. It aids discovery of new artists regardless of their name or provenance. Sonaris was co-authored by Michela Magas and Cyril Laurier, aided by an award to Stromatolite from Innovate UK. It builds upon two sets of PhD research which became more than the sum of their parts. The first version of Sonaris enabled discovery of music from the AWAL - Artists Without A Label - an independent collection which includes artists like Moby and Thom Yorke. Sonaris technology was used to power the Songlines exhibit at the "Make It in Great Britain" exhibition at the Science Museum during the London Olympics using Peter Gabriel's Real World music catalogue. Sonaris supplied the technology for Peter Gabriel's Cue Songs PRO music licensing platform. Sonaris AI has developed original technology platforms for innovative artists such as Beardyman and Romain Tardy and works with a series of independent global music collections. It builds on the work of the IoT Research Cluster (IERC) and expands activities towards innovation within and across industries. This also offers an opportunity to discuss legal obstacles to further IoT take up, and to forge consensus. The Alliance is to help the Commission prepare future IoT research and innovation, standardisation and policy. The Alliance is also to be instrumental in the definition and design of IoT Large Scale Pilots to be funded under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. These pilots could include solutions in markets like smart living environment, farming, wearables, smart cities and mobility. The Alliance should help build the links and forge the cross-sectorial synergies required for this. Since the #MusicBricks pilot the methodologies have been scaled up to include all sectors of industry and all the evolved methodologies have been ported into the Industry Commons Foundation. The uptake by industry was notable already during the pilot. By the time of the pilot's Market Testbed, 7 tools were added by industry partners, to a total of 15 tools. A transversal experiment was conducted between #MusicBricks and Philips Hue, combining sound and light for therapy, communication and generative performance. The patent registration had registered interest from heavy industry. As an ecosystem #MusicBricks was built around a specially-deveoped toolkit - a compendium of both physical and virtual interfaces and APIs, that allow creators, developers and digital content makers easy access to core building blocks of music. Developed by some of the world’s best music tech research centres, #MusicBricks have been made available exclusively to creative developers, researchers and artists attending select Music Tech Fest events. Cue Songs is a new quick way of finding and licensing music for use in digital media, backed by Peter Gabriel. It has gathered all of the big music publishers, including Sony, EMI, Warners and Universal in the quest of opening up large portions of their music libraries - mainly back catalogues and up-and-coming artists - for off-the-shelf music licensing. "By introducing low prices and easy online access, Cuesongs is creating a new market for music, to satisfy a huge untapped demand that can begin to provide new income streams for artists,". (BBC, quoting Peter Gabriel, see bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16794798) The Huffington Post writes: "Nasa’s head of media has called to say the site has eased his licensing nightmare, and beta testing has yielded other whispers of support."
