At the Agency for Nature and Forests I coordinate European funding programs such as LIFE, INTERREG and Horizon Europe to implement conservation actions across the Agency's reserve network and other Natura 2000 sites in Flanders, Belgium. I also support the EU and International Policy team. I have been the Belgian pilot for the EU Nature Restoration Law regulation proposal and I participated at both IPBES9 and COP15 as expert of the Belgian delegation. During the past four years I have directed the conservation projects of Fundación Jocotoco (www.jocotoco.org), an Ecuadorian NGO which protects a network of 16 reserves throughout the four ecoregions of Ecuador, including the Galápagos Islands. Together with a talented team, I have coordinated the creation of three new reserves to protect endangered fauna and flora and managed a portfolio of 50+ projects, including many restoration projects in multiple ecosystems in Ecuador. During my time at the Universidad Nacional de Loja, I worked as scientific coordinator at the main research direction of the University and the CITIAB (Centro de Investigaciones Tropicales del Ambiente y Biodiversidad) research group. I wrote several project proposals to get research funding for the university and taught the 'scientific writing' class for biology students. I just arrived to Ecuador and accepted this position, until the Conservation Director position at Fundacion Jocotoco was offered to me. Show less

During my PhD I studied the host-parasite relationships of Neotropical birds and three models of symbionts (protozoan blood parasites, feather mites and viruses causing skin lesions). My main interest focused on the environmental factors and host characteristics which limit or promote coexistence and diversification of functionally equivalent symbionts. By exploring parasite exploitation strategies I aimed to unravel the processes of diversification of these symbionts in megadiverse bird faunas (mainly in the Podocarpus National Park in South Ecuador).
