Michaela has been an absolute pleasure to work with since I started at upReach. From the very start, she has engaged with the programme and has shown an incredible dedication to her own self-improvement and growth. I have no doubt that Michaela will achieve great things professionally, whether this is in a Law or non-Law career.

Xavier Banson

Michaela joined the upReach programme in November 2020, being highly engaged and dedicated to her professional development from the very start. She has shown huge drive and commitment to enhance her skills further, demonstrated by her achieving the Gold Award on the Law Springboard. Michaela has attended numerous Video Forums to strengthen her application skills and commercial awareness, Mock Interviews to improve her communication skills and Insight Days to better understand the sector. Because of her dedication, I have no doubt Michaela will go on to achieve great things and I look forward to seeing her progress!

    • LSE CHOICE Government & Politics Stream
      • Aug 2019 - Mar 2020

LSE CHOICE is a university widening participation programme that gives young people from London state schools the skills they need to successfully apply to highly selective universities. During summer school, I was given an introduction to the study of Politics and understanding the different ways in which Politics can be described in academia. I enjoyed learning about the activities associated with Politics such as activism where I was given the opportunity to question an active member of Extinct Rebellion. In addition, after the summer school, I participated in sixteen masterclasses where I engaged in different contemporary political topics like legitimacy, climate globalisation, populism and whether the assassination of Qasem Soleimani was a war crime. This experience has allowed me to strengthen teamwork skills and research skills. Show less

This programme has given me an introduction to Law in practice through shadowing a trainee and partner in a magic circle Law firm, observing a court case at the Royal Courts of Justice and actively participating in activities at the Inner Temple. This programme has also allowed me to build a network with like-minded students who also share a passion for understanding and learning Law. This programme has made me become more confident in public speaking and forming arguments through workshops on mooting. Show less

    • Law Masterclass
      • Feb 2020 - Feb 2020

This was a Law masterclass held at Boies Schiller Flexner (BSF) London Office. BSF is an American international Law firm known for their work in Litigation. The masterclass began with an introduction to the firms Arbitration and Litigation practice. Then there was a networking session with trainees at the firm where they explained the application process for applying to BSF and their day to day role. To end the masterclass, I was split into a group of 6 people where we were presented with the motion 'The Government should restrict freedom of speech'. This experience was valuable in given me an insight into the role of an Arbitration and Litigation lawyer and the different opportunities and experiences students can gain regardless if they are legal to support their application for schemes and training contracts. The Inner Template is one of the four barristers Inns of Court. This programme was designed to dispel myths about becoming a barrister. This programme involved participants receiving an introductory presentation about the Inner Temple and life at the bar. Then there was a question and answer panel session which focused on the diversity of the bar and what the Inner Temple is doing to make it more inclusive. The last session involved reviewing different case laws where participants were given the task of writing an argument to support the defendant’s defence. Show less

    • RBS- First Step Legal Programme
      • Jul 2019 - Jul 2019

Competitively selected as one of 20 out of over 60 applicants to participate in the one-week programme. Strengthened time management and analytical thinking in a practised mock assessment. Attended workshops at Addleshaw Goddard, HerbertSmith Freehills and Coutts. This programmed has helped me to understand the services that RBS provides and the role of a lawyer within the financial sector. My favourite part of this programme was the negotiating workshop with DMH Stallard, as I had to construct an agreement deal for my client to avoid a dispute with the other party. This involved me listening clearly to terms made by the other party, clarifying the goals of my client and posing good knowledge of the issue in question. Show less
