It was clear from the first interview I did with Michael that he has advanced capabilities with physics, mathematics and engineering. I hired him to research and develop new products and systems. He did not disappoint, putting his sharp mind to the task and coming up with innovate ideas that were actionable in the real world.

Jim Callow

Michael is good to work with, not only because of his knowledge but also he is always willing and helpful. He is willing to tackle pretty much any job with confidence and a bit of humor.

Since 2010, I researched and developed novel cost-effective and portable instrumentation for low field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This included: A) Theoretical and numerical modelling (Finite Element, COMSOL, MATLAB) for prototype construction and optimization (3D CAD design) including electromagnetic field generation (static magnetic field, sample signal at radio frequencies) and structural mechanics simulation of stress and strain in permanent magnets due to attraction/repellent forces and rapid acceleration/deceleration. B) FEM simulation and experimental evaluation of mechanical vibrations of a pre-stressed cylindrical coil. C) Initiating and experimenting with ultra-sensitive novel magnetic field sensors developed for operation under ambient conditions without cryogenics. D) Developing and writing research grant applications (>15) which let to the successful application of 1 Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Research Award (ARC-DECRA) awarded and Discovery Project (ARC-DP). E) Writing journal papers and research presentations at external conferences/symposiums and regular presentations within the organization. Collaborations with Chinese Academy of Science, Harvard University, Los Alamos National Laboratory or Queensland Quantum Optics Laboratory. F) Peer reviewer for scientific journals (optics, MRI, magnetism), ARC grant application and external organization like the US - Department of Energy. G) Student (PhD, Master, undergraduate) support and supervision. H) Course coordination and tutoring postgraduate course "Magnetic Resonance Imaging instrumentation". I) Setup and operation of ULF laboratory. Creation of health and safety procedures, HSE assessments and operation manuals in accordance with University policies and Legislation standards. J) Design and construction of portable magnetic shielding enclose for experiments. Show less
