Developed a Robot Operating System (ROS) package that enabled concurrent remote piloting and open-loop control for semi-autonomous operation of the amphibious robot. The system was central to a first-of-its-kind experimental program to study amphibious vehicle dynamics during transits of coastal surf. Experiments, sponsored by ONR, produced highly-repeatable data in an indoor model-scale surf environment useful for the validation of new numerical tools and deepening our understanding of a complex interaction. For my Ph.D. I'm working to take what has been learned from previous surf zone testing of amphibious vehicles and develop more sophisticated controllers to better understand vehicle control in surf and to further our understanding of vehicle dynamics in surf for the development of better computational and reduced order models. • Designed mechanical and electrical subsystems necessary to transform a model amphibious research vehicle from marine only operation to land and sea mobility including dynamic mode switching, resulting in a 45% reduction in testing time. • Programmed a Robot Operating System to take the same robotic vehicle from remote control only to semi-autonomous operation with an open-loop control script achieving an average 30.2% reduction in vehicle position and attitude standard deviations during surf zone environment testing. • Presented and published the experimental methodologies and results in the proceedings of the 34th Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics. As a Graduate TA for Fluid Mechanics, I oversaw the lab portion of the class ensuring training of other lab TA's, proper operation of lab equipment, and materials for students. Additionally, I consulted with the lead instructors on how to reorganize the class during COVID to ensure student's still got valuable use out of the lab time.As a graduate TA for Energy Systems Design, I assisted with the selection and structure of the course topics, I developed all lecture materials and the three course exams, and led the twice per week in-class discussion sessions. Assisted driving the IIHR 100 meter tow tank for both large block coefficient and streamlined Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV) towing tank tests. Maintained experimental analog and digital instrument issues such as pressure transducers and load cells cutting debugging time in half. Supported the set up and tear down of the experiment in the towing tank. Investigated future vertiport concepts for Uber's urban air mobility project. I compared each model presented by the bidding architecture firms from the 2018 Uber Elevate conference judging them based on their aerodynamic characteristics, passenger throughput, and ease of construction. Recommended the Uber Hover Future Vertiport from Humphrey's and Partners as the ideal candidate to be tested by our CFD team and to be built for model scale wind tunnel testing. Developed the manufacturing process for building model vertiports for small scale wind tunnel testing. Created two graphic design posters for outreach related to the mars helicopter and urban air mobility. Cinematographer, editor, and co-director for Aeromechanics branch 2018 outreach video. Volunteered to represent NASA at four outreach events in the Bay Area. • Determined the first concept vertiport for urban air mobility to be studied at NASA for wind tunnel testing as the Uber Hover proposal using a first principles approach. • Collaborated with a small team of engineers on the design of a full scale computational fluid dynamics model and several model scale iterations for wind tunnel testing of the Uber Hover concept. • Developed the manufacturing processes to build scale model vertiports for wind tunnel testing using hot wire foam cutting and laser cut wood veneers.
