    • Badminton Coach
      • Sep 2010 - Mar 2016

I began coaching classes at another badminton club but was invited to the Seattle Badminton Club to start up a new junior program. I became nationally certified as a coach and attended many coaching workshops. Through extensive networking and curriculum planning, I assisted in expanding the junior program from a class of 5 students to multiple classes totaling 100+ students. I coached multiple days of the week and also brought junior team members to local and international tournaments. At these tournaments, I provided emotional and tactical support during and after matches. From training with Olympic players in high school to spending every weekend coaching at the gym, badminton has played a huge role in my life. Coaching has taught me the importance of patience and flexible planning when teaching juniors and adults from diverse backgrounds. There are people who learn better through logical explanations and those who learn via kinesthetic action. It was important for me to be sensitive to each individual’s tendencies and switch gears in order to maximize learning. Coaching badminton also allowed me to apply my medical training. After learning about diet maintenance or exercise science from other activities, I always incorporated healthy methods/exercises into my lesson planning. It was imperative for my students to learn how to take care of their bodies. Winning tournaments was important, but I emphasized correct technique and conditioning more to prevent injury. After so many years of coaching, I also developed a great relationship with the club community and with the parents of students. I felt incredibly blessed to have supportive parents and an encouraging management. Parents trusted me to develop their children physically and mentally, and shouldering that responsibility motivated my growth as a person and a coach. Show less

    • Tutor
      • Nov 2015 - 2016

I tutored junior high and college students in a variety of math and science subjects. I worked freelance for the last five years, recently signing with The Learning Professionals. I chose them because I agreed with their mission statement of developing children to be better people while tutoring. I also helped working adults with test prep by helping them plan study schedules and giving strategies on adhering to these plans. Despite students suffering from short attention spans or had difficulty comprehending the questions, I patiently helped them reach priceless “ah-ha” moments. I also emphasized practical application of what they learned as education is not confined to a textbook. For example, when learning about percentage arithmetic, I encouraged my students to calculate tips and discounts at the dinner table, to which they enthusiastically exclaimed, “Math was more useful than they thought.” Show less

    • Surgical Assistant
      • May 2015 - Dec 2015

Working as a Surgical Assistant is a perfect combination of my past work experiences in a medical environment. I juggle room turnover, pulling surgical instruments for cases, and assisting nurses with patient care. I also assist the Equipment Manager by processing equipment orders because I looked for more opportunities to help out. I also had the priceless opportunity to learn about orthopedic procedures from surgeons in the operating room. The nurses taught me to scan for obstructed blood flow and to think proactively ahead. Anticipating the surgeon’s needs required self-study and careful observation, but the seconds saved meant lowering risk for our patients, our number one priority. This position is one of my most meaningful experiences because I have been most directly involved in medical patient care. I have witnessed doctors sewing ripped tendons back together and give disfigured cancer survivors a second chance at a normal life. Observing doctors save lives is an amazing experience, superseded by playing a role in the process. As an assistant, I have learned about more surgical instruments than I could possibly imagine and have had the rare opportunity to hand dressings to surgeons at the operating table. Patients trust their lives to doctors and their team members. I often smile reassuringly at nervous patients entering the operating room because I want them to know they are safe. Working in tandem with an amazing team of surgical techs, nurses, and surgeons has taught me the importance of teamwork and efficiency. We rapidly process room turnovers because everyone is proactive and communicating what they had finished. This team has also stressed the importance of taking breaks, especially when working in the high-tension environment of the operating room. Show less

  • The O Institute
    • Bellevue, WA
    • Intern
      • Jun 2013 - May 2015

The O Institute is a wellness center focused on stress management through dietary and emotional measures. I started out observing how Dr. Kim established a sense of trust by quickly diagnosing their stress symptoms while keeping a calming tone of voice. Interested, I enrolled as an intern where I helped plan and execute clinical research studies regarding changes in patient symptoms during physical and mental stresses. We conducted studies at the Starbucks Corporate Headquarters and the Seattle Badminton Club, gathering a diverse data set for the study. I also assisted with office management duties, including re-scheduling patients and phone customer service. Show less

    • Physical Therapy Aide
      • Jun 2012 - Nov 2012

As a physical therapy aide, I assisted with room turnover, escorting patients, and requested patient charts from physicians. I was often the only aide for the ten-room clinic, which required multi-tasking and priority management. Despite the chaos of appeasing fifteen therapists simultaneously, I always made time for patient requests because their comfort was the utmost priority. I helped make ice bags for patients, held the arms of stumbling patients, and even watched over children as their parents finished their therapy. A patient’s sigh of relief while I assisted them made every stressful moment worth it because it meant I had made an impact on their recovery. I also gained experince working with MISYS Electronic Medical Record and RAINTREE EMR software to categorize and match patients with therapist schedules Show less
