NU Racing is the motorsport team for The University of Newcastle. In 2019 we entered and raced our first Electric Vehicle in the Formula SAE Australia competition, completing every event and far exceeding our goals for our first entry. My involvement is in planning and executing electronic safety systems, working within the project constraints to produce modular, sustainable solutions. Safety systems need to be predictable, reliable and robust. During my time with NU Racing I established internal guidelines on Printed Circuit Board design and component selection to reduce design burden and improve reliability of student-developed circuits. Feedback from competition design-judges pointed to these considerations as outstanding design among entrants. Show less

This role was a definite shift-of-gears - I was responsible for the safety and comfort of up to 10 hikers at high altitudes (4700m) in the Andes of Ecuador. The role required leadership and decisiveness, especially in cases where symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness present. Being of service to hikers of different abilities and in variable weather was challenging, and incredibly rewarding. A super mixed-bag of design, writing, filming and educating - we create original tutorial videos that have reached hundreds of thousands of makers. I had the pleasure of designing, prototyping and programming Core Electronics' first DIY kit - successfully launched from a crowdfunding campaign [Linked below] A major and ongoing project was the writing and filming of an educational, online workshop series targeted at makers and hobbyists who wish to level-up their skills with Raspberry Pi, Linux, Python and BASH. [Linked below. You can tell I'm closer to hitting my stride in the more recent videos!] I hold regular in-house workshops that familiarise participants with the Raspberry Pi computing platform. Granite Power is a power company delivering low carbon-emission electricity and research in solar-thermal and waste-heat recovery. I was awarded a scholarship with GPL in my second-year of studies, during which I helped construct and program the research solar-thermal GRANEX facility in Wallsend. The plant runs a novel, direct-heated, supercritical Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). When my scholarship matured, I remained working with GPL. My responsibilities included: • Develop and implement plant automation strategies. • Develop plant optimisation strategies for thermal storage. • Plant operations - Supercritical ORC; direct heating; solar thermal. • Maintaining/updating technical records. • Specification and maintenance of plant equipment.
