    • Co-Founder/CEO
      • Nov 2016 - Present

In 2016, with my partner and wife, Darah Willey Robinson, I founded Shifting Lenses, a community workshop series designed to build a stronger community through deliberate connection. Using experiential activities and self-exploration, we help people learn how to communicate more effectively, control their narrative, and forgive themselves and others in order to live their lives with purpose and intention. Together we discover the tools we need to build communities full of compassion, empathy, and mercy.

      • Sep 2015 - Aug 2017

As a Student Success Coach at High Point University (HPU), I personally monitored the academic progress and social adjustment of students, in the School of Communication, designing a plan to help them reach their personal goals and live out their dreams. I also worked closely with HPU’s Bonner Leader Program, a service centric work-study and leadership development program, which includes some of the most marginalized students on the HPU campus. During that time, I along with other university partners, developed a curriculum specific to the needs of the Bonner Leaders centered on understanding their own leadership styles, the role they play as ambassadors for the HPU community and the citizens of High Point, and the unique situations that they may encounter as students representing marginalized groups on our campus. I felt it my duty to challenge students to think about how they were going to take their college experience as an opportunity to flourish as the thing that they are and use their unique talents and skills to make a positive and thoughtful contribution to the world. During my tenure at HPU, I worked to ensure that each of my students left our interactions feeling empowered and encouraged by their own ability to decide to put in the work toward the life they imagine for themselves.

Throughout my academic and professional career, I have dedicated and focused my efforts to creating a more inclusive and peaceful society through direct action in my classroom and community, working with young people and adults of various backgrounds, to grapple with and unpack our most pressing social issues. As a high school English teacher, I created curriculum which focuses on the social justice issues of our time, challenges student’s perception of the world and asks them to make sense of it. I have written curriculum for Guilford County Schools aligned with Common Core State Standards designed to help young people become aware of social justice and equity issues the world over, and subsequently learn how to become advocates for causes that were important to them. This coursework included, among other things, asking students to make documentaries exploring the effects of typical depictions of marginalized groups in media, create interactive board games raise awareness on the connection between poverty and hunger and participated in daily discussions which press them to think critically about social justice issues such as gender inequality, now, before they are asked to make decisions about them later. This lead to me being chosen by the Office of Diversity at GCS to develop a module called the African American Literacy Tool Kit educators district wide intended to help them explore their on biases and privilege in order to better serve their students of color.
