Having discovered a true passion and purpose in working with people through my continued experience in real estate sales, it wasn't long before Robert Betts, a highly focused, driven CA (SA) with experience in both recruiting and real estate, very quickly appreciated my own sense of direction and opened my mind to the potential I might have as a recruiter. My career path as a Chartered Accountant had afforded me an extensive background in finance, accounting and auditing, and although I was unable to find a sense of meaning or future in these fields, they form an invaluable baseline of knowledge and experience that help me to relate and understand the technical and unspoken nuances of the niche finance industry.I intend to push through the surface and find out what is really going on, in our minds and in the world, so as to add value and insight that goes one step further, many questions deeper, and transforms our expectations into gratitude and appreciation. The greatest investment we can make is in people. We are not all created equal, we are all created unique. To appreciate this and align that hidden sense of meaning in our memories of the past and our visions of the future, we create passion, purpose and a hunger to express ourselves through our work in the present.

While working toward completing my articles, I had become obsessed with the question: "How do I create real value". My experience of articles was that it was a commodity purchase. People mostly buy it because they have to, and so price and capability become the distinguishing characteristic's of ones service and product, at the expense of any meaningful investigation.I felt that I was too busy getting the job done to really focus on anything that really mattered. After finally completing my accounting articles, it was clear that I needed more of a challenge, and I was still desperate to learn. Then I found Brent Currin, the founding principal of Currin Property Group. Brent's humility allows him to effortlessly share his incomparable depth of knowledge in property, negotiation and people. In working with Brent and the team at Currin Property Group, and being exposed to Real Estate and Sales, my perception of life was flipped upside down, and I realized that the value of one's attention has little to do with how much one is paid for it. It afforded me a true appreciation for the value of sales and the psychology of my own mind. I found a sense of depth in engaging with people and their unique personalities. Providing value through my insight and service to people that I had developed working relationships gave me a real sense of meaning, all the while being abreast of the property market and providing me with understanding of the risks and challenges involved in owning and managing property. To this day I work still work with Currin Property Group and continue to learn while also developing my property portfolio.

Manager responsible for the conduct of audit, review and compilation engagements, from planning through to finalization and signature on small to medium sized clients in the commercial and industrial sector. In addition to providing accounting and taxation advisory services, a diagnostic report detailing and assessing risks, so as to recommended practices and processes that improve and strengthen the financial reporting process is delivered, which is often the highlight of my work. Gabion Baskets (Pty) Ltd. is a friendly place, with an even friendlier managing director and owner. They sell and install gabion baskets (mesh fencing filled with rocks), having long since established a foothold within the competitive construction industry. Supplying to municipalities, large contractors as well as residential and commercial customers, they have performed consistently and adapted with the times.I took the reigns of the small financial department which had been established and maintained by an elderly woman who was retiring. I saw it as an opportunity to first learn the basics of financial management, and then to develop, refine and implement improved processes and controls, both financial as well as operational, aimed toward providing insightful data that we could use to make sound business decisions, as well simplifying and strengthening the existing control environment.*During my 8 month stay, I succeeded in my goal of scrutinizing and reworking where possible the full range processes, and perfected the ins and outs of financial management, including but not limited to: -Preparing management accounts-Maintaining the payroll system and ensuring prompt employee payment-Consolidating stock counts, in order to analyze and compile the data-Maintaining customer and suppliers ledger accounts and review of reconciliations-Approving credit notes-Maintaining supplier accounts and supervision of reconciliations-SARS (eg. PAYE, UIF, SDL, VAT etc.) and monthly supplier payments -SARS communication, calculation of income tax and preparation of SARS VAT201, ITR14, PROVSA and EMP501 returns.-Annual and monthly budgeting-Cash flow forecasts and planning*For example, a system whereby stock costs could be tracked through the production process, providing increasingly accurate inventory costing and gross profit analysis, as well as a robust auditing trail resulting in reduced losses, more efficient scheduling and employee accountability.

Servworx is a garment rental company, rapidly growing against all odds in the small town of Pietermaritzburg, whose most notable clients include Rainbow Chicken, NBI and Ola.During my brief and engaging stay at Servworx, my most renowned contributions had been the development of controls around the safekeeping of assets essential to the distribution of garments and the garments themselves as well as implementing a record keeping system to measure individual productivity and establish accountability. Other daily roles and responsibilities included supervision of +-25 factory staff, liaison with customer representatives, ensuring the timely distribution of garments, redesigning delivery schedules to be more efficient, production management and supervision and ensuring operational control documents were up to date and accurate.

My first real job, and a fantastic learning experience. I was fortunate enough to have been a part of the "retail group", whose clients varied enormously in both size and industry. This gave me the opportunity to be exposed not only to how companies operated in their respective industries, but over time allowed me to piece together the bigger picture, of how the elements of the financial statements harmoniously tie together, an opportunity that was often not afforded to audit clerks who were assigned to multi-national corporations, where their entire audit experience was often tied to a single client, on a single (or few) audit section(s).
