Michael was a MSc candiate in computer science under my supervision (which he completed successfully). He was a very original thinker with a clear ability to think outside the box. He has a great combination of analytical skills, perhaps due to his physics background, as well as a great pragmatic sense and lots of applied knowledge. He's also a lot of fun to work with since he is both personable and well informed. I felt fortunate to have somebody like him as a student under my supervision.

When Michael joined our team at SOMA, he wasted no time becoming productive. He saw what we needed, and he found a way to do it. His professionalism was incredible; he was not just a highly productive programmer, he was a pillar of our group. If this man moves to Boston, I want to hire him.

Soma Networks is a startup company which developed a large cell, broadband wireless solution for data and voice. At Soma, I acted as “gatekeeper” for our call processing software. In this role, I was responsible for performing system and regression testing on all code changes, with power to veto or delay if necessary for system stability. I participated in design and code reviews for all proposed features and changes. I maanaged and maintained the call processing group’s qualification labs, expanding testing capabilities and performing upgrades where necessary. I coordinated builds and releases with developers and with management, within call processing and other upstream development groups, as well as with our downstream integration and radio teams. Hotline was a startup which developed Hotline Communicator, a client/server application for internet community building and file sharing. I was hired as a graphics specialist, and was responsible for the graphics subsystem for Communicator 2.0 ( a product which never shipped ). The specification for the product allowed for nearly total user control over the appearance af the application, up to and including overlapping UI elements with varying degrees of transparency. This presented considerable challenges to the task of designing a fast, cross-platform graphics subsystem. Working in C++under Linux, Windows, and MacOS, my duties included architecting the basic graphics architecture of the application, performance tuning of image processing and display routines, supporting input and output of popular image formats, maintenance and debugging for all emergent graphics issues. I was hired at Alias to work on the StudioTools product suite, a freeform surfacing package for automotive and industrial design. My initial project at the company was to port the StudioTools suite from IRIX to Solaris. This work gave me valuable experience in working with large code bases ( 3 million lines ), as well as in navigating the subtle differences between OpenGL implementations on different platforms. After the port was concluded, I moved onto the SID team. SID is a package for 2D sketching which lives inside of the 3D modelling environment of StudioTools. As a member of the SID team, I developed an innovative marker–like color blend, which approximated subtractive marker ink while maintaining interactive performance. Show less

My research focus was in Machine Vision and Image Processing. My thesis topic was Shape From Darkness, an algorithm which attempts to determine the physical structure of a scene using only the shadows contained within a sequence of images of the scene under different lighting conditions. The principal contribution of my research is that it was the first work to perform the reconstruction directly on a three dimensional scene. Original Sim was a startup which was an offshoot of the simulator company CAE. Our product was a toolkit for the design of simulations for military applications. Users designed simulations using a GUI, and then deployed them by exporting to either C++ or Java. I was initially hired to write demo-ware consisting of several physically motivated simulations. Later, I wrote a tutorial covering all of the product’s capabilities. Finally, I ported the product from IRIX to both Linux and Solaris.
