During the summer after law school, I worked as a fellow with the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago. My work mainly focused on helping clients obtain Social Security Disability benefits. I drafted motions and briefs in preparation for hearings at both the Administrative Law Judge and federal District Court levels. I found that my experience as a physician helped me review medical records quickly and accurately, and I was able to help others at the firm navigate extensive and often confusing medical terminology. While at ALCC I also compiled a practice manual to guidestaff who were assisting clients who were appealing their health insurance plan's denial of prescription drug coverage. Through this project I was able to more fully appreciate the complexity of the healthcare insurance market, and the difficulties individuals have navigating it. Show less

As a summer associate with Foley & Lardner in Chicago I developed my legal research and writing skills. I worked on a variety of cases including False Claims Act defense for a hospice center and an arbitration between two reinsurance companies. I also helped to draft a contract for a sporting event and conducted research into the FDA regulation of mobile health devices. I also participated in pro bono activities during my summer, helping a grandmother obtain custody of her grandson, whom she had been raising in his mother's absence, and going to a local high school to help teach about free speech in schools in the context of Tinker v. Des Moines. Show less
