I became a high school teacher because I thought I could help students see their own potential, learn to work hard, and improve their attitudes towards math. I seriously underestimated how hard that can be. I did expose hundreds of students to computer programming with Visual Basic and Java. Some of them found programming was a new passion and went on to major in Computer Science in college. Many of my math students found they really could do math if they tried. Some enjoyed being challenged and learning a wrong answer is just a step towards the right answer. The relentless pressure to improve test scores and energy needed to change the minds of students who did not want to try eventually wore me down. Rather than lower my expectations, I retired. Opening doors for students and helping them see they can create their own opportunities, no matter what their background, is something I will always miss. In addition to the joy of helping students succeed, I learned how to prioritize and manage a challenging workload better than I thought possible. I got better at keeping my cool under pressure and finding effective solutions to classroom issues quickly. I also learned that I missed working with a team sharing the same goals and vision.
