Mike was the Director of Information Technology during my time as a network systems administrator at the Gazette. Without hesitation, I would jump at the opportunity to work for Mike in the future. I greatly appreciate his management style; a rare combination of goal-oriented focus, technical skills and an deep understanding of people. This fostered a "can do" attitude in those who worked for him. Mike always made expectations clear to his staff; balancing short-term requirements and long-term goals amid constantly evolving business priorities. Mike always displayed a genuine interest in both the business itself and how technology can be applied to serve the greater business needs and improve efficiencies. He encouraged all his staff to do the the same. Mike communicated well with staff in several ways: through regularly scheduled group meetings, in emails, by phone, and on a one-to-one basis. Approximate once a month, Mike would drop by a speak with each staff member for a few minutes just to see how things were going. By doing this, Mike gained an appreciation for both the strengths and weaknesses of his department and the personal dynamics of his staff. Mike was always careful during any such discussion to not countermand the managers who reported directly to him. Mike is certainly "solution/team oriented", encouraging staff to consider alternatives and to seek improved efficiencies where practical. Mike found many ways, both large and small, to make the work environment both productive and enjoyable. He will be a strong asset to any company fortunate enough to engage him.
