Meschelle is a warm, intelligent, and hardworking individual. I am extremely pleased to work with her! She is welcoming, nonjudgmental, and kind. She’s always happy to support me and other team members, and I am confident in her abilities. Meschelle is my go-to colleague when I have any payroll questions; she is very knowledgeable and skilled. Meschelle also has a wonderful energy! She is calm, patient, and immediately brings forth positive vibes. I strongly believe that Meschelle is an asset to our team, and I know she will be an integral part of any team she is part of in her future endeavors.

While interning at IFPRI, I primarily assisted researchers on the Southern Africa – Towards Inclusive Economic Development (SA-TIED) project by providing feedback and edits for technical papers based on rigorous economic analysis. I also researched supporting articles for literature reviews and completed other administrative tasks. For example, for one paper I researched the status of milk consumption and dairy trade throughout the southern Africa region to assess the economic impact of increasing dairy consumption for children in South Africa. With these data, I designed infographics and wrote a literature review that the author is incorporating in his final paper.

During my time at GWIPP, I monitored the legislative changes in property taxes, particularly preferential treatment taxes, which are levied to preserve existing preferred land uses (i.e., agriculture, forest, open space, and historic property). On a regular basis, I updated the database with legislative and programmatic changes that have occurred in all 50 states. As a vegan and animal welfare advocate, it was a dream interning at AWI on the Farm Animals Unit. Throughout my internship, I tracked federal and state bills regarding animal welfare policies to determine whether AWI should support the proposed legislation. For these bills, I assisted in drafting public comments and wrote summaries to debrief the team on their language and status. Additionally, I drafted social media action alerts for members and supporters of AWI. Finally, I assessed the accuracy of third-party animal welfare certification programs for food labeling claims to ensure animal welfare standards were met. I also reviewed state records to identify and report on animal welfare regulation violations.

As an auditor of comprehensive payroll and billing reports (hours, overtime), my attention to detail for 200+ employees was critical to ensuring that every employee received accurate pay. I balanced this with creating and auditing 200+ invoices weekly for clients. With just a team of three, we managed to get a lot done while still supporting each other! To address high turnover rate for payroll and billing coordinators, I took the lead on training staff and creating standard operating procedure manuals, which improved morale and support for colleagues. My environmentalism was noticed by senior staff and I was selected to be the lead of the Green Committee. In that capacity I facilitated all monthly meetings and spearheaded initiatives to promote conscientious green habits in the workplace.

    • Editor-in-Chief (promoted from Editorial Assistant)
      • 2014 - 2015

In my undergraduate studies, I volunteered as an editorial assistant before becoming editor-in-chief of the literary journal, Icebox (now defunct). As an editorial assistant, I read all submissions and forwarded the works I thought we should consider for publication to the editor-in-chief. I also helped copyedit some of the content in the journal and conducted two interviews with poets whose works we published in the journal. As editor-in-chief, I oversaw all aspects of the journal's composition, including deciding which works we would publish. Early on in the semester, I appointed the other journal volunteers, including the editorial assistant, web designer, and artist. With help from my editorial assistant, I edited and proofread all content in the journal. Additionally, I liaised with bookstore owners for distribution purposes and assisted with webpage maintenance. On behalf of Icebox Journal, I cohosted the Philosophers Cabaret with the philosophy club at Pierce College. The annual event celebrated the intersection of philosophy and the arts.
