As a research officer, I am tasked to oversee the care of the lab, from purchasing, maintaining lab, to propagating and maintaining plasmid stock and over 50 transgenic Zebrafish lines. In addition, I am working on two research projects, studying real-time in vivo protein trafficking in enveloping layer cells of Zebrafish embryos, and studying the effect of drugs on secondary neurulation by drug delivery to the spinal cord via the central canal by microinjection into the fourth ventricle of Zebrafish embryos. As a research assistant, I am tasked to create new analogues of the drug Thalidomide through organic synthesis using various chemical reactions such as oxidation, dehydration, condensation, substitution and Heck reactions. Using various methods such as crystallization, thin-layer chromatography, column chromatography and vacuum filtration, I was able to isolate 7 different new analogues of Thalidomide and identify them using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) analysis.
