I am a Labor Relations Specialist (Mid-America District) for the United States Postal Service. As a Labor Specialist, each specialist is assigned territory in the district. I am responsible for managing my workload in my territory. I work/meet with four (4) Unions (National Association of Letter Carriers, Rural Carriers, Mail Handlers and the American Postal Workers) on a daily basis. I am responsible for all grievances filed by National Association of Rural Carriers in the district. It is my responsibility to give guidance to management whenever situations (possible violations) occur. I review/interpret local contracts as well as manuals and handbooks to educate management of the proper procedures on addressing any type of violation or situation. I am required to be knowledgeable on all Bargaining Unit Agreements (contracts) to enable me to provide specific guidance on policies, procedures and agreements. I am responsible for investigating grievable actions and making decision to support or deny actions in the appeal process. When denied, I prepare a position for the Postal Service to support the decision to deny the grievance and help assist in the decision making at the next appeal process. I am responsible for articulating a decision to prevent costly arbitrations to the Postal Service and find a resolution for management and union to negotiate some sort of compromise. It is vital in my duties to effectively communicate with management and union representatives to conduct investigations, discuss and resolve grievance activity and prepare written correspondence for grievance matters in the workplace. I am also responsible for writing all discipline, (Letter of Warning, Suspensions, and Removals) for my assigned territory. Show less
