The City’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) integrates geographical (spatial) data with informational data using the latest technology. GIS provides a geographical framework for the City's information, assets and inventory. More importantly, it helps your government work better. A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, integrating, analyzing, manipulating, and displaying data related to positions on the Earth's surface. A GIS can relate otherwise disparate datasets on the basis of common geography, revealing hidden patterns, relationships, and trends that are not readily apparent in spreadsheets or statistical packages, often creating new information from existing data resources.GIS is used in almost every department in the City of San José, and the uses of GIS range widely. GIS is used to map land boundaries, infrastructure such as utility pipes, zoning information, parks and trails, and other City assets. GIS is used as an analytic tool to answer questions and make better decisions• Using a highly technologically advanced Magellan GPS system, I was given an area to go out and take pictures of utility units, calculate the coordinates of each unit, obtain the measurements for any and all pipes, company mark. • At the end of the day I upload all the information gathered, a map is created and intermittently generating until the specific area is completed, and I can close down that specific map and start a new area of interest.
