Krista Lazarus Gilliland, Ed.D.

As Melodie's cooperating teacher at Leeds Middle School, I have first-hand knowledge of her skills as an educator. She successfully led my classes for several weeks, and also assisted in preparation for standardized testing. Ms. Pettway went above and beyond what was asked of her, and she always had interesting new ways to present the information to the students. Writing isn't always fun for students, but Ms. Pettway made it enjoyable. They always looked forward to when she would instruct them. She would be an asset to any middle school.

My degree concentration is in Secondary English Education/Language Arts. My academic studies included observations at various school systems and an internship within the Leeds City Schools system at the secondary level (7th, 9th, & 11th grades). My studies also called for an intensive dissection and overview of different genres of literature and an in-depth analysis of the English language. At my internship, I effectively put theory to practice and actively engaged my students in learning. I worked with students who had both exceptional and average learning abilities using small group, whole group, and individualized instruction. I also worked with ESL students. My most fulfilling experience was reaching a student who had autism and afterwards watching him eagerly participate in classroom discussions. Also, I attended different functions such as an RTI meeting and a faculty meeting. Show less
