I had a great experience working with Melissa as part of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Sustainability Team. She did a great job handling diferent environment and social projects, being able to contribute deeply with the whole team. She was an effective team player, very flexible, working with others and acting together to accomplish our joint mission.

Melissa and I worked together in several projects related to the FWC 2014 Sustainability Strategy, but especially close for the Football for Hope Festival which I managed locally. She always demonstrated commitment and focus even when under pressure and time constraints. It is worth noting her important role in the successful implementation of the Football for Hope Festival Stakeholder Engagement & Legacy Plan. Her passionate personality, excellent people skills and knowledge in the field of social responsibility made her an asset to our team.

For one year, Melissa was the Operations Director of Community in Action, a grassroots NGO in one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest favela (shanty town) communities. She is an excellent team member; a motivated leader; and a determined social entrepreneur. Melissa not only helped launch numerous outreach programs in the underserved region where we are located, but she also helped build our new operating model, which will pave the way for many years to come. As a team player, Melissa works extremely well with others and always incorporates diverse problem solving approaches to achieve short- and long-term goals. She consistently paid close attention to detail, delivering high quality work-products that were always in-line with our mission and strategic objectives. Furthermore, her cultural sensitivity and language acumen (speaking fluent English, Spanish, and Portuguese) allowed her to collaborate extremely well with others from diverse backgrounds, which I’m certain she’ll draw upon as new ventures emerge. As a leader, Melissa not only knows how to prioritize tasks and implement projects with little oversight, but she also manages others with clear direction and mentor-ship. For Community in Action, she oversaw all volunteers and staff during her tenure, supporting their personal development needs in unique ways. In addition, she represented our organization in the region, working with numerous partners and community stakeholders on a continuous basis, adding credibility to our new operating model. Her professionalism and leadership was shown through all activities, from planning to implementation to performance management. As a social entrepreneur, Melissa unites compassion with strategic planning. She understands the needs of impoverished populations, especially in Brazil, and she is driven to support sustainable development causes. As the Operations Director she always demonstrated a deep understanding of our beneficiaries, supported by concrete action. For example, she helped lift our computer literacy program off the ground, working with CDI (cdi.org) to deliver 40 computers to four local schools, reaching more than 700 students. Our pilot program’s success can be attributed to Melissa’s support. On behalf of the entire Community in Action team, I highly recommend Melissa for future employment or academic endeavors. Her work ethic; her optimism; her strategic planning competencies; and her cultural sensitivity will be invaluable for any team. She was a fantastic member of Community in Action and we look forward to remaining in contact for many years to come!
