BUSH SCHOOLDesigned and delivered a 5 week Bush School program for 3-5 year olds and their caregivers. The aim of the program was to encourage kids to enjoy the great outdoors and find a strong connection to their local environment, while expanding their mental and physical skills. Success was determined by behaviour outputs - children were more confident investigating and navigating the area without assistance, and caregivers became better at allowing their children to make informed risks. Feedback from caregivers also noted increased confidence in their children, noticing developing skills that they hadn't had before, and more desirability to engage with their children in the outdoors on their own. Changes were made to improve the program, and Bush School now runs at Centennial Park five days a week.

I was awarded a Widening Participation grant from the University of Sydney to develop a curriculum-connected citizen science program for primary schools to engage with their environment and connect with the university. I developed a program where primary school students in Years 3 to 6 could participate in ecological research. The program built upon current ecological research identifying how ant assemblages and their role in seed dispersal could be used to describe the ecological integrity of remnant bushland. I created learning resources supporting multiple key learning areas in the Stage 2-3 curriculum to prepare children for a two-hour excursion in their local environment. Students readily engaged with the program and the learning resources that were developed. Satisfaction derived from the field component of the work was a vital link to encouraging children to participate in this citizen science initiative.
