Everything I needed to know about journalism, I learned from Melissa Segrest. She was one of my first bosses -- the kind you talk about years later. Tough! But creative, compassionate, and funny. A masterful editor. Fast-forward a few years, and I found myself as Melissa's boss as USA Today. And she taught me again new ways to think about telling stories and managing people. Melissa is exceptional. Hope our paths cross again.
Maria Henson
If Melissa were an artist, I'd liken her approach to Picasso's. She mastered the intricacies, ethics and standards of good journalism in the way great artists first sharpen their eyes for perspective, color and composition. As an editor in Austin where I worked with her, she nurtured the creative flair of her writers and editors, urging them to take chances, delight, surprise and be colorful -- anything but pedestrian. It was fun to watch her oversee the Statesman's millennium project in which anyone in the newsroom could participate by drawing a slip of paper, lottery-style, out of a container. The paper listed a random year. The assignment was to find something or someone remarkable to write about from that time. She herded cats and shepherded one of the most memorable projects I've seen in a newspaper. She likes innovators and risk-takers; she's one herself. You'll like her ideas.
