Throughout the period I worked at the Northolt RAF camp, I gained a wide range of experience due to being flexible and working in different areas of the camp; The coffee shop, junior ranks bar, Officers mess, Officers bar, Sergeants’ Mess, Sergeants’ bar and the Junior Ranks Mess. Throughout working in these areas I have gained a professionalism I have never had before, my communications skills have greatly improved due to working with a range of different customers on a daily basis. My time here has allowed me to gain knowledge in handling money through setting up in the mornings or cashing up in evenings. While in the coffee shop/bar I gained practice in stock taking when required, beer line cleans, function set ups and managing the opening of the shop in the morning, and shutting down in the evenings, which I learnt to do through practice. Due to functions and how busy they can get from 50+ people attending, I’ve learned how to work effectively under pressure and even more so in a team as there can be up to 4 - 6 bar staff working a function. However, when working low scale functions on my own, I am efficient and get all my required jobs done throughout the duration of the function so that I am not left with everything at the end of the evening. Due to my experience in all the areas within the camp, I am often called upon to cover shifts or work all functions when low on staff; I enjoy working functions as it’s a new experience every time. This job entailed that I aided the students with homework from all subjects across the curriculum, ensure they understood the work that they have missed and listen to problems that they may have. Over the two years I spent tutoring, I found myself applying patience and understanding as I had never done before, I had a sense of responsibility for the students I tutored and strived to push them and encourage them to get the best grades possible while supporting them with continuing improvement of reading, writing and listening.
