My first year at JCPS, I worked in the Exceptional Children Department at VanHoose Education Center in the Home/Hospital office. I screened phone calls and assisted parents with the application process to have their child placed on Home/Hospital services. Took in applications and processed them to all appropriate staff that had to approve the services, then contacted the parent with approval or denial, and also scheduled Home/Hospital teachers to go out and see the students. We received a large volume of phone calls per day as my direct supervisor was over several other programs as well. Other duties included: typing documents, filing, mailing, and reports, while maintaining confidentiality at all times. The other 2 years I was at JCPS, I worked in word processing where we typed psychoeducational, physical therapy, and occupational therapy reports for service providers from across the district. Each employee in this department was assigned a set number of staff that we were responsible for typing their reports. The provider called into a phone number and recorded their reports and we listened to the recording and typed the reports, which were sent for final approval by the provider. Of course confidentiality was of upmost importance as we were dealing with extremely confidential information pertaining to students from across the district. Show less

Medical Assistant/Surgery Scheduler
-
Oct 1989 - Sep 1996
While working at the Spine Institute, I began as a Medical Assistant providing direct services to patients and physicians in exam rooms. This included taking patient history, assisting with in-office procedures, answering patient phone calls, calling pharmacies for prescription refills for patients, making and receiving phone calls for our physicians to other physicians, assisting physicians in each patient exam room, and completing all necessary in office paperwork. Then I moved up to scheduling surgery for the 4 Orthopedic Spine Surgeons in the office which included coordinating surgery schedules with the hospital, patient, and assistant/co-surgeons from other practices. I was also responsible for obtaining all insurance prior authorizations with private insurance, workers compensation, Medicaid, and Medicare. I was responsible for all aspects of the surgery schedules for the physicians including making sure they had all necessary supplies, X-rays, MRI, etc. Communicating frequently with the physicians to make sure everything was accurate for each surgery ultimately made things smoother for the patients and the physicians on the day of surgery. Of course patient confidentiality was of upmost importance in all aspects of the medical practice. Show less
