For 6 months I have had the pleasure of having Melanie Follett as my student. She attended a data analytics boot camp at the University of California, Irvine. We provide a comprehensive course that teaches students how to leverage popular data analytic technologies such as Python, R, Tableau and TensorFlow. Students are assumed to have no background knowledge on how to code and they finish the program with an intermediate proficiency in code research, programming and debugging. Melanie excelled in her studies and earned an A+ in the course. This grade was earned over the course of 18 personal project assignments and 4 group project assignments. Each of these assignments displays Melanie’s grasp of data analytics techniques. The course started with Excel to show traditional data analytics techniques before moving to Python for advanced data analytics techniques. The course also teaches full stack web development, which allowed Melanie to expand on her coding skills to create user interfaces for data driven applications. Finally the course is polished off with machine learning but the individual projects were optional in this category. Nevertheless Melanie took the time to take on these 2 additional projects in machine learning and big data analysis and earned A+’s on both projects. There are 3 group projects that Melanie collaborated with other teammates. The first group project Melanie and her team analyzed what factors lead to successful video game sales. This project was the first milestone of the course where Melanie and her team were asked to utilize the lessons and homework experiences from the beginning of the course to make a comprehensive data analysis of a topic of their choosing. The team earned an A+ in this assignment and they carried on to form a permanent team for the rest of the course. During this project I have observed her leadership, enthusiasm and technical expertise, which I believe is why this group remained highly successful with the second and third milestone projects. The second milestone project consisted of creating an interactive website that could showcase data analysis. Melanie and her team decided to create a website that offered data driven recommendations on which parks you can visit if you want to hike, see wildlife or locate nearest to your location. The third milestone project utilized machine learning in order to predict or classify data. Melanie and her team decided to perform data mining for their project. The team used web scraping to collect Reddit and Twitter comments and then performed sentiment analysis to convert the comments into numerical sentiment scores. Using classification machine learning, they were able to collect categories of user interaction by perception, emotion and personality. As the course progressed and new technologies emerged, Melanie has shown a strong will to master new concepts. The greatest quality that she has exhibited was her ability to be a quick study and ask questions early
